    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Useful to a point - but you need other Microsoft Applications (Access / SQL Server) to fully benefit   October 18, 2008
Useful explanation of the Excel functionality that is available to extract & manipulate data stored mostly in non-Excel & non-Text files.

The main drawback to the book is that you need Microsoft Access / SQL Server to benefit from the many worked examples - something that I wasn't aware of before I bought the book. I was hoping to explore the powerful features of Excel's 'data mining' tools by experimenting on large (over 66,000 records) text files - which are readily available on all PCs without the need for Access / SQL Server. However, early on in the book you are advised to install the Access Northwind SQL database to enable you to work through the many worked examples. If you don't have this (Access) then I think you are stuffed. I found that many of the SQL commands didn't work on text files.

Therefore, I would advise against buying this book if you don't have Access / SQL Server. I'm no expert - so if someone could tell me how to get all the SQL exercises to run on a PC without Access / SQL Server then I will gladly update this comment.
