Office 2008, a slow pathetic step forward January 6, 2009 Dear Microsoft
I have owned Office 2004 and 2008 and they were both pretty poor. Why should Mac users have to suffer from useless and ugly software when Windows software that came out the year before is far superior.
People, this really is bad. It lacks functionality, its ugly and quite hard to use at times. Word has all the decent features removed and is hard to use. Excel is uselss and don't start me on Power Point. The worst of the worst though, Microsoft Entourage. Its better than Mail but thats free and i'm afraid Entourage is by far the worst of any payable mail applications on the market. Its ugly (see what i'm getting at here) and goes with the rest of the office suite in looking totally out of character on a Mac. It is also fiddly. Messenger for Mac is rubbish, always has been and it seems it always will be. It has almost all the decent bits of the Windows version removed and then made to look more ugly.
Don't waste your money, i have brought I Work as well but thats still not up to scratch.
What to buy:
Parallels 4 40, this will let you run Windows on your Mac simutaneously unlike Bootcamp
Windows XP or Vista for the operating system
Windows Office 2007, you can keep all your Windows applications in your Mac dock for easy use. Its honestly the best way, i understand its pricey but once you have it installed you can run all Windows application!
That way you have the best of both worlds while still running the better OS primarily.
Seem fine to me... December 12, 2008 I recently moved over from a PC to a mac. I was worried because I'm a postgrad student who writes alot and was happy with MS Office for my PC. Herd some bad stuff about Office 08 for Mac, but I've had no problems at all, in fact I think it's better. Granted it takes a couple of weeks to get up to speed, but thats expected.
No problems for me.
A must if you own a mac November 30, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Have some people been using a different version of this software from me? (or trying to run it on OS9 maybe?) It's not perfect (lack of VBA support, lack of advanced features in Excel, slow to start up, not fully compatible with spaces), but I think it's quite good and definitely worthy of four stars (I'm running the latest update 12.1.4 at the time of writing). iWork '08 is not a good idea, as although Apple say it's compatible with the word and excel formats, it doesn't display the advanced formatting in these files properly. The only serious competition Office 2008 has is OpenOffice 3.0 (which now runs natively on the mac).
Constantly crashes November 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It constantly crashes in Word, Excel & Powerpoint. In Powerpoint I could not even open the drawing toolbar without it crashing even with all the patches. You cannot run macros with this software either.
It's useful to view documents if you are using a PC and a Mac but not for any serious editing.
surprisingly good November 28, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
i've just made the move from pc to mac. my only big concern was compatibility, but i am happy to say that i have been surprised at how easy and compatible my mac and its software have proved. this is largely due to this product, office 08 for mac. a different interface from the pc 2007 version i also use, which adds 5 mins per piece of work the first few times you use it. But pretty soon, its just as usable, and has opened up all my previous pc based work to my new mac world... i am a very happy customer/ user!
