    Editorial Reviews:

    Product Description
With this high-class digital camera, Nikon decided not to increase its impressive megapixel power but to bring together all the elements that make for a great camera! Here it is, the D40! The most compact digital camera ever developed by Nikon! The D40 is Nikon's first ever camera to offer all the advantages of the "Image Total Nikon" system thanks to its compatibility with Nikon AF-S lenses. More compact and lighter than its predecessor, the D40 has a 6-megapixel sensor and incorporates a 2.5" LCD screen for ease of use. Extremely fast and always ready to take photos, the D40 has a starting time of just 0.18 sec. This camera also has a continuous focusing mode of 2.5 photos per second, which is ideal for sports photographers! Supplied with an AF-S DX 18-55cm lens suitable for the most common photos, the D40 is also equipped with an EN-EL9 1000 mAh battery, which allows you to take 470 photos on one single battery charge. The D40 is without a doubt the wisest choice for all landscape lovers and photographers looking for a fun-to-use digital camera!

5 out of 5 stars Buy one   January 8, 2009
I was like many people who have given a review here. I do not usually bother to give a review but I have to say that this camera is cracking! I looked at the websites of Ken Rockwell and Cameralab which really sold me on this camera as not needing anything over the 6mb mark. The images actually look better on the D40 than the D80 if you look at these sites. It is easy to use and I have now bought the 55-200 lens along with the SB400 flash. Great to take lots of pictures of the kids. Some are great and those that are not - just bin them! Don't bother looking for the holy grail of cameras that take perfect pictures every time. Accept that many will just not be up to scratch but in there will be some real treasures.

5 out of 5 stars Great camera   January 7, 2009
Having used a Nikon FE Film slr for many years I found the cost prohibative so I bought a little Fuji digital compact. This suffered from chronic shutter lag so I found I had lots of pictures of empty air. I Upgraded to a Canon IXUS 55 this I found took good pictures but without very much flair. My wife suggested I bought a DSLR but I felt that the cost of a good camera would be too expensive until I spotted the Nikon D40 from my favorite online shop ( Amazon) at a really good price and some really good feedback from reviewers.

When my D40 arrived I was absolutely delighted with how well it fitted into my hands and that you could set and reset all the settings without having to take your eye from the viewfinder as all controls can be operated from your right thumb leaving you index finger on the shutter release.

Nikon seems to have thought of everything so that even if you are new to photography you can learn and grow with this camera with ease. If you are more accomplished you can use very advanced techniques to get those really arty shots.

This has really reawakened my interest in photography without the very high running costs of film and processing. Together with the ability to experiment and review your results immediately rather than having to wait until you have finish a roll of film and either develop it yourself or wait for the local chemist to develop it for you by which time you have forgotten what setting you used and it to late to correct any mistakes.

The only thing I can find fault with is, Nikon do not supply any memory card so if you open the box hoping to start immediately you will have to source a card first. I would have thought that a small capacity card could have been supplied just to get you going.

In conclusion this is a great camera from a great supplier, in my opinion, you can buy with confidence.

    4 out of 5 stars I love this camera   January 1, 2009

Bought this as a christmas pressie to myself, as a bundle with the 18-55mm lens, and a sigma 55-200mm lens. Spent the day at london zoo playing with it - and all I can say is WOW! New to DSLR's - though I had a bridge camera that I stopped using because of it's limitations.

Only downsides I can find are 1. the on/off switch is way to easy to hit when packing the camera away - leading to run down batteries, and 2. The sheer volume of options - it's going to be a lifetime of learning to master them all - but what fun I'm going to have while playing!

5 out of 5 stars Yet another satisfied customer   December 26, 2008

I will not try to go into technical details. The other reviews say it all.
Its light,Quick and well made. Does the job with wonderful results. The price was good and delivery excellent. My wife nagged me not to open it till xmas.Xmas day seemed to take forever. Finally it arrived and nearly cut myself in the rush to get at it. I was very happy with it and spent the entire morning trying it out.
The manual covers every thing but I found it a little confusing. Have sent for a book on it, also from Amazon. Why? Well given Amazons service to the many things I have bought from them it's my most used supplier. Go on, you won't regret it.
