Magic Lantern DVD Guide Canon 40D March 1, 2008 30 out of 30 found this review helpful
OK, Let me start by saying that Amazon have incorrectly listed this as "Hardcover" at the time of posting. Sure, I knew that a DVD was involved but maybe had the impression that it would be integrated into a book as so often the case with computer type books.
This is NOT the case. All you get is a DVD!
As for the DVD. Well I gave it 3 Stars not because of Amazon (I would have awarded them 1 star for that mistake!)mainly because it's a little too basic for my liking.
If you are an absolute beginner to Digital SLR's and find manuals hard to follow then I would recommend this as a quick to get started guide. If you are part or fully experienced then you may be disappointed.
I think video is a great way to present ideas, especially the tricky stuff and for the presented material they did a fine job. My main problem was in being put off fairly early by being told all the things that they weren't going to cover, most of which was precisely what I wanted to see.
The presenter often gave the impression that since he didn't think a function was particularly useful, he wouldn't cover it. Sure I agree that it would be impossible to cover everything on a DVD, but in reality it's impossible to know what is covered without buying it, so buyer beware.
The main areas are:
Features and Controls: (Just a walk around the camera) Image Quality Settings: ( A look at the menu settings) Shooting Modes: (More settings) Menu Navigation: (How to get there) Customizing Picture Styles: (Starting to get a bit more useful) Best Focus mode for most shooting: (As above) Flash Photography: (Basic but useful) Getting White Balance Right: (Probably the most useful section but could have been expanded) Settings and features to avoid: (Mostly opinion.)
Comes with a Quick Reference Card - Basic but possibly useful for a beginner.
Absolute Beginner? - Buy it Intermediate? - If you want it buy it but may be disappointed. Advanced? - Don't bother!
