1 out of 5 stars DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY   December 20, 2008
Like the previous reviewer I read this in a very short time-however I did not find it at all funny and came away at the end of the book feeling that it had all been rather pointless and that the book itself was also overpriced. Disappointing work from a very talented author. Hope she's not going the same way as Patricia Cornwell whose last couple of works have definitely not been value for money

1 out of 5 stars Nope, sorry not for me.   December 1, 2008
I'm an avid Slaughter fan, but this one....not so much. In fact, I didn't bother to finish it, it just didn't engage me at all. Borrow someone else's copy if you feel you must read it.

1 out of 5 stars Martin wasn't the only one who misunderstood!   November 30, 2008
I was aware as many others were not that this was a novella from the start so that is not going to take up any more of my review.

I just can't put into words who the author was trying to reach in an audience when she penned this book - really I can't....but.... she could write any old crap and people will buy it, just from her track record of developing really good traumatic thrillers; (this wins the category of any old crap).

The story is repulsive from just a couple of pages into the tale and made me think that she had done it on purpose to have a laugh at her audience. Take for instance 'competed with the disturbing, yeasty odor that had come as she uncrossed her legs. This lady fug stuck with Martin, and he caught a whiff of it even now as Unique headed across the parking lot.' If this is the standard of fiction writing that this lady is going to rely on in future then count me out of the reading list! It went on in the same vein with little or no development, even for such a measly 147 pages all in with chapter breaks and empty pages.

Maybe she was trying out Noir writing but it didn't work for me. Thankfully I didn't buy it as I would be embarrassed to have this on my bookshelf or pass it over to somebody else.

I do hope she can do better and realise that this standard and prose is not what her many fans have come to rely on - and enjoy.

I love Karin slaughter books and have read them all. I was really disapointed by this slim book. Certainaly not up to her usual standards and not the slightest bit funny. Dont waste your money on this book

1 out of 5 stars Not value for money   November 15, 2008

As a Karin Slaughter fan, I was ready to buy this when it was released. After seeing how many pages it was I didn't. In the end someone bought it for me as a gift. It's a fairly interesting short story although it's easy to work out it's all about Martin's mother. This isn't up to the standard you expect from Karin Slaughter. It isn't a crime thriller and the characters within the book are very stereotyped - I feel this also lets it down quite a bit. It isn't a funny book, but then it can't be serious either. It just leaves you wondering why you're reading it really.
