All Hail Octavian December 10, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Jim Butcher is a master storyteller and writer. If only he could write faster. The Dresden Files are awesome and so is the Alera series. I have finished this book and am going straight back to re-read it. To me that is a hallmark of a master storyteller.
If you are a sword, sorcery and adventure fan buy this book.
Princeps Fury is the fifth book in the Alera series, it is not a stand alone novel you will need to read the previous books. All five books are above average. Do yourself a favour go out and get this series you will not be disappointed. Great Christmas present to yourself.
Best book written in Years!!!! December 7, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the 5th book in the series codex alera ( if you have not read this series ..why?) it is brilliant, complex plots, complex charecters, fantastic writing. The best book i have read in years!!!!!...and years!!!! It is not a stand alone book you must get the others in the series, or you will not follow the story. The author does not treat you as a fool and dives straight in to the story without pause, and ends on a cliffhanger that will irritate and make you itch for the next book!!!!!!
Butcher does it again.... November 27, 2008 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Princeps' Fury for those who don't already know (and if so, why not?) is the fifth book in Jim Butcher's excellent Codex Alera fantasy series (the previous books being - Furies of Calderon (Codex Alera) (Codex Alera),Academ's Fury (Codex Alera) (Codex Alera),Cursor's Fury: Book Three of the Codex Alera and Captain's Fury (Codex Alera (Paperback)). The books are set in a Romanic influenced society where the people have furies - sort of elemental powers over air, water, fire, earth and metal that are used for everything from healing to construction and transport. Tavi (Octavian) the principal character started the series as a furyless shepherd living on a middle of nowhere hold (farm) but his birthright as the Princep (heir to the throne) of Alera has eventually come rather dramatically to light.
This book is not a stand alone work and for anyone picking it up without having read the previous books in the series it's not going to make much sense. Jim Butcher doesn't waste time rehashing previous plot points for the uninitiated, he just plunges straight into the action and this book is seriously full of action.
The story begins several months after the events in Captain's Fury. Tavi, along with the First Aleran and Free Aleran Legions are aiding the Canim to return to their homeland but the threat of the Vord has returned to Alera and the Icemen in the North are also proving an increased threat. Bernard, Amara and Isana all have dangerous missions to complete in Vord occupied territory and in the icy wastes by the Shieldwall.
This book does not suffer from lack of plot, action or drama and I could't put this book down once I started reading it. The Tavi strands were gripping and the Canim culture was interesting to see more of. It was also fascinating to see how he develops as a leader and strategist. The Isana and Amara subplots also interesting and there's so many threads being woven for future plots in the next (the last from what I gather) book of the series. While the storyline in the Canim homeland was concluded the book ends on a cliffhanger and it's going to drive me mad having to wait another twelve months to finish the story properly.
All in all this is an excellent book and one which existing fans of the series will love. If you haven't read the other books in the series - read them now. It's a fantastic series from a fantastic author.
