3 out of 5 stars How Microsoft Excel can help you solve your business problem   December 18, 2003

This book is not about statistics. If this is what you want to read about, then you are probably better of with something more specific. It is not really about using Microsoft Excel either, as other books offer a much better (and more concise) overview of the software functionality. It is more about using it for some specific, often statistical, functions of Excel, and the add-ins provided in the accompanying CD. It does so with a lot of examples and small case study, covering many typical business problems. The book is probably a good read if you use Excel often and want to improve your skills, or if you want to solve a particular problem that is covered in one the chapters. Some add-ins are quite useful (some are indeed quite powerful), but all are evaluation versions (only valid for one year) and the outputs (graphs) display with watermarks! (just in case you want to use them in a report or presentation).

This book is good purchase if you use Excel EXTENSIVELY and REGULARLY, in Human Resources, Accounting, Finance, Marketing and Operations…

3 out of 5 stars Academic text book, written by academics   March 23, 2002

The book itself is heavy, which passes a test for most academics. Having said that though, this means that it is packed full of examples and that is both a good thing and a bad thing. If you're a time pressed student, you're only going to buy this book if you're told you have to (as I was). The authors would do well to pick up any book in the "Dummies" series and see how to explain what they have to say using fewer examples in an easy to read format. The book comes with software loaded in a CD, which is essential to load if you want to follow the course outlined in the book. 80% of my intake wasted hours upon hours going to the web-site and downloading patches, calling our own and the author's tech-support and eventually installing the software, so a tip is, go straight to the web-site and download all of their patches, before you even think about starting and be prepared to call the US. Finally, I received a lot of calls from less gifted colleagues, because the examples start assuming that you know what you're doing, very early on and so jump steps in their explanations. All in all, would benefit from fewer, but more comprehensive examples. Oh if only the "Dummies" series had a version.
