Does what it says on the cover April 19, 2007 This is a course book for those new to VBA, but an experienced Excel user. It is the perfect introduction to Excel VBA & guides you through your first encounters, with a knowing hand and not a misprint in sight. It is however a course book, not an extensive reference text. Also, I would have hoped for a couple more advanced chapters, such as working with other MS Applications or advanced error handling. All in all however, spot on.
Surely There Are Better Books Than This ? December 31, 2003 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought this book because I already had a reasonably average understanding of both Visual Basic and Excel and I hoped that it would achieve the goal of merging the two into one with some useful exercises and also maybe help me develop applications using 'Excel' and 'Access'through my own VB graphic interfaces. The title seemed ideal but I do feel a bit let down. I have really tried hard to absorb the information and work through the tasks slowly and surely but it is an uphill struggle. I bought it about two months ago and I have picked it up so many times but its just not readable . The first seven chapters are mainly about Excel Macros. The macro then becomes a little viewable program that you can edit. This is the hard bit to absorb, actually trying to understand it line by line and trying to understand or remember the point of the exercise or what its got to do with Visual Basic. Its so full of programming words and expressions that just don't register. I will perservere with the book and try to brush up on the programming side but I hope that the penny will eventually drop one day and the book might then make more sense. In summary, the structure of the book seems poor. It starts by saying that it is for excel users to use as a platform for building applications. Thats exactly what I wanted to do but I don't think I will get there with this. Its not readable and its no good as a quick reference either.
Spot on! All the fundamentals you really need are here October 10, 2003 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
What if you are a good excel user, know some very basic VBA, but only use it once in a blue moon and keep on forgetting it? What if you decide that you need to break that barrier and actully make VBA work for you without throwing too many hours learning it?This is the book you need. No BS, assumes you know enough about Excel and doesn't waste time and ink going through the same old things. Even better, it teaches almost everything by very pertinent examples, so that in the end you end up using bits of code from the various lessons to write your own macro. And it knows what you need - this has been written by someone who actually understands what we need to get going! I don't see the need to ever get another book on Excel VBA.
Good book for VBA Excel August 27, 1999 18 out of 20 found this review helpful
This is an extremly good book, if (i repeat IF) you know what you are doing in excel. For instance, I was left in the deep end when I came to the chapter on pivot tables. The chapter just jumped straight into programming pivot tables. I had never used pivot tables before so this was a dissapointment. Other than that it's a good book - but i recommend that you know a couple of programming languages before.
