5 out of 5 stars Really helpful beginner's guide to Macros in Excel   July 3, 2008
I came to this book as a beginner to writing macros in excel. And for the beginner it is most helpful.

I had previously used many of the other functions in Excel, and had written macros in non-Microsoft spreadsheet programmes a long time back, in the years before Mr Gates acheived total dominance of operating system and office software. But I had never quite managed to get into Visual Basic and despite regulaly putting into my personal development plans that I needed to hack this, I kept putting off doing it.

Then came the day this nettle really had to be grasped: I absolutely had to write a Visual Basic macro, and my boss offered to lend me this book.

Extremely easy to follow, the examples worked perfectly, it had the information I needed. Where the options had been set up differently in my copy of Excel, the book clearly explained how different choices like "option explicit" can be set up and what they mean.

Don't know what version of Excel was being used by the reviewer who said that examples in this book don't work. I was using Excel 2003 version 11 and they worked perfectly for me and for a colleague who was looking to complete similar tasks and to whom I dictated some of the examples down the telephone.

Can't comment on how helpful an experienced macro user would find this, but for beginners it is excellent

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointed - every example is wrong!   May 2, 2008

Hard to believe, but every single example code in this book is NOT how you should program - the code is very poorly laid out, and in some cases the code doesn't actually work as described. Even more confusing, a lot of the screen shots cannot be generated with the code that's shown in the example (the author has apparently created a different version of the same code so that he/she can take screen shots)

So in short, 10 quid down the drain, we're off to buy something else.

I have done some VBA programming before (years ago) which was self-taught and I bought this book as I need to do some VBA again, but I wanted to make sure I learnt the language properly this time. Unfortunatley I didn't really find this book all that useful as I found it to be far too simplified. The book does give you all of the basic concepts and syntax etc. of the the language, but it doesn't exapnd on any of this to give more details.

The book is very colourful and clear - fairly large print and lots of screenshot graphics. But that for me was the biggest problem. The graphics and large text take up so much room which is why there is so little detail. It also gives the whole book an almost childish feel. I read throught the whole book (including doing most of the examples myself) in a couple of days.

If you're a complete beginner and want to get started quickly and aren't bothered about the details then this book will be good for you. If you're a beginner and you want to know the details then this book may OK to start with, but you'll soon be looking for other books to fill in the missing information. If you're not a beginner then I'd say don't bother with this book at all.

This was my first 'In Easy Steps' book bought to help in my engineering career, and it was a great help. I knew very little about VBA before, however after going through the examples and reading about the syntax, I had some cool little programs running. The book is colourful, well written and easy to understand; it is general and so covers a lot of different areas. For a complete beginner like me, it took me to a good level of understanding. Its not a big book, which is of great appeal for someone just starting out, although a seasonal pro in VBA might find it too basic for his needs. I can thoroughly recommend it to a first-timer and will definitely be buying more books from this series.
