3 out of 5 stars Frustrating for complete novice Dummies   June 9, 2010
    A Wild Wanderer (UK)
Quite comfortable with many Microsoft applications and more than proficient with most, I'm completely new to MS Access so bought this guide to take me through the principles in a way even Dummies can understand. Simply put, it doesn't.

Yes, it describes the basics, mechanics and various functions using quite simple and easy-to-understand language but it doesn't join the dots to form a cohesive 'now you've built a working database from start to finish' kind of way.

From this guide, I fully understand the concept of one-time-only data input with various tables being joined by unique 'key' data, but when I want to input (let's say...) an order, *how* do I successfully pull the already known information (such as names and addresses) into an order screen? I follow the guide on Forms (that incidentally doesn't properly explain what a form is meant to do!) and find error messages galore. Frustration does not begin to describe the 4 days I've wasted for the sake of what must be a simple set of instructions that make the penny drop.

It needs a sample set of simple exercises using a common application (like order entry) to demonstrate not only the principles, but also the relationship and practical application of each element.

Dummies guides normally make my understanding complete. This one has confused the hell out of me.

5 out of 5 stars Access made easy   May 31, 2010

I found this most useful for learning the updates in Access 2007 over previous incarnations, plus was good to revise and brush up on rusty skills.

This is much better than the other Dummies book on access 2007 (see previous review) but I would have preferred a book that took you through building a sample database incorporating all the features. These books describe the features in an isolated kind of way.

I really feel as if I know a lot about access 2007 but I still can't build a database with all the bells and whistles that I bought the book for. I still have not got to grips with Visual basic for access and macros and multiple relationships is a big headache.
