4 out of 5 stars Not for the fainthearted   July 3, 2004

After readomg sp,e reviews on many books about Access I wanted a book that didnt treat me like a "dummy" and this book certainly devlivers.

I am an intermediate user of ACCESS 2000 and wanted a book that i could use aa reference in the workplace, and already have gained some insight into speeding things up, as well as finally grasping the hows and whys it does things.

This book is certainly not a "how to use Access" as the majority of the book is hard coding, more in VBA and SQL which was ideal for me becuase i wanted to have complete control on things.

If you are after a "how do i do this in ACCESS" kind of book this is not really for you. However if you are a professional and want to learn some new things to help you develop your own solutions this book is ideal. The level of detail is astounding.

In all honestly when this book arrived i spent 20 mins skimming through and though "oh my God" and didnt touch it again for 3 days. However as teh title suggests, it is a Desktop Edition and sure enough come the time 3 days later when I wanted to do something at work, i looked it up in the index and hey presto there was something for me - and all I had to do is look!!

Fantastic book, though like i said alot of the code you will have to be able to understand so it might be worth investing in a VBA book of somesort.

Excellent for hardcore developers, not for people who no nothing or dont quite know VBA/SQL statements.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for the experience access developer   October 28, 2003

If you already know your way around Access and are looking for something to expand your knowledge then this (and volume 2) are the books to have. Detailed and comprehensive, even as a relatively experienced Access developer I learned something the first time I dipped in it.

It's not perfect - the index seems a little scant and in my view the structure seems to be a bit hit and miss - but if you're serious about developing applications in Access there is no better book that I've found.

A note of caution though, this book isn't for those with no experience of Access, Database Design or Visual Basic.

Having used Access for some years at a basic to intermediate level, this book gave me the kickstart to move on to the next stage. Quite simply, Excellent!

If you develop application ivolving Access (97 or 2000) you must own this book. That's it.

    5 out of 5 stars The only good Access publication ( we've bought a few )   January 13, 2000

This is excellent, well organised and very informative. Unfortunately it does not cover ADP's too well - this is promised in volume 2. Otherwise this book will save you much time - especially considering the distinctly dodgy online help available within Access 2000.
