4 out of 5 stars Got an antivirus? Now speed your PC up!   November 20, 2008
The title says it all, really. This program isn't an antivirus and consequently, it won't protect you from nasties you happen to download (accidentlaly or otherwise) from the internet. I always like to make this sort of thing clear because I've fallen victim to mistaking programs to have an antivirus, only to find it doesn't have one. Try Kaspersky or Nod32 if you are looking for an AV program.

So what TuneUp Utilities does is in esscence, finds ways to speed up your PC or laptop (running Windows Vista or Windows XP) by tweaking your system here and there, cleaning up unused files which are hidden on your hard drives and performing certain other tasks which can make using your PC that little bit better.

In my experience with this program, all is well. The first time I told it to analyse my computer, it found lots of different things it could do to speed everything up. The most noticeable tweak was deleting hidden files buried on my main hard drive. About 80GB was freed up! How about that, one sixth of my drive's space used up on something I didn't even realise.

Things get better from here on, the registry cleaner is very handy and has improved the overall performance of my machine greatly. I really do believe it takes off years of neglectful PC usage in a few minutes. My dear old XP machine feels much leaner and my newer Vista machine is that little bit quicker loading programs and the like.

So all in all, if your PC is suffering a bit but hardware upgrades aren't really considerable, then this might just save your machine for another year or two. Stand back system-slowing antivirus programs, it's time for us to take back what's ours!

4 out of 5 stars Easy to use   November 20, 2008
This programme is simple to use and has performed a number of handy tasks. Among other things, it fixed a curious internet explorer problem that had the incorrect icons appearing beside my bookmarks. As for whether it offers much that web programs couldn't do, I'm not too sure. However, if you're looking to fix registry problems then it will certainly do the job for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great item, great value, perfect for home users   November 17, 2008
TuneUp Utilities 2008 is perfect for home users wanting to speed up and fix problems (which always occur, like it or not) on their Windows machines. There are customisation tools, if you wish to make Windows look a bit different to the norm, although they can be slightly system-intensive, but run fine on more recent and more high-spec machines.

The defragmenter tool is probably the most effective; there is usually a noticeable speed difference, and it runs more efficiently and at the same speed, than the in-built Windows defragmenter. There is also a tuning utility, which I also saw a speed increase when using, 'optimising' the settings to make the system and Internet connection run faster.

One of the main advantages to this software is the price - it has a bundle of features, without the usual bundled anti-virus or Firewire, and in my experience, you do see a noticeable difference.

4 out of 5 stars TuneUp Utilities Good product For A Novice Computer User .   November 11, 2008
TuneUp Utilities2008 in my option is a good product but not the best out there . It manages to do most of the jobs that a lot of free utilities on the website are available for download ,either free of charge or adware or even not fully operational until of coarse you give them a fee to unlock all properties of the trail products.
TuneUp Utilities is id say a ok product but like i have said there are far better products and even the free products are a lot better than this by some miles , but if it should be reduced by a good amount of money then it may be a reasonable option to purchase this product, but please take my advise and search for free utilities that are out there on the w.w.w ,one itll save you money and secondly most of them are far better than this .
The only reason you should purchase this is if you a total novice no offense intended but if you are just starting out ,its a safe bet to use but not quite as useful at doing some more of the more serious tasks that do need to be done every now and then on your computer to keep it running at its best .Regards Pete.

4 out of 5 stars All the system maintenace tools you're likely to need   November 10, 2008
I've used TuneUp in a series of incarnations for several years, and the 2008 version is undoubtedly the best yet. The interface is attractive and intuitive; it guides you rather than leaving you to choose from a huge number of tabs and options. For example, it asks whether you want to increase performance, free up disk space, maintain windows, solve problems, etc.

If anything, it tries to take too much control from the user, by default setting a scheduled maintenance run where it cleans your registry and deletes `unnecessary' files behind your back. I recommend you take a good look through the options immediately after installation and, in particular, fine-tune "1-Click".

It also tends to be a bit too enthusiastic about deleting files such as recycle bin contents, system restore points and log files. The recycle bin is there for a reason and, for most people, if space is a problem, it may be better to reduce the size of the bin than delete its contents. The same applies to restore points. I would prefer it to apply a little intelligence and if, as in my case, the C drive is only half full, default to deleting truly wasteful things like temporary files.

Be aware that many TuneUp functions, such as defrag and startup manager, are available in Windows or through free utilities. But I'm beginning to be over-critical - TuneUp succeeds in bringing together all the tools you are likely to need into an easy-to-use suite and adding lots of help and advice. I wouldn't want to be without it.
