    Amazon.co.uk Review
Who needs a personal finance package on their PC? Well if you pay bills, own shares, plan to make a will, write cheques, have a mortgage... in fact if you are an earning, spending consumer in the 21st century, a package like Money will make your affairs easier to manage. It should even make you a little richer.

Money has quite a pedigree. Though Microsoft only entered the personal finance market a few years ago, it has quickly carved a big slice of the market. Microsoft knows we all want to get our finances in order; it also knows that, to most of us, they are a terrifying mystery. So, with yearly updates, it has honed Money so even the financially illiterate can compile a personal financial resume in around half an hour as the software pumps you with questions. Money then swallows the details of accounts, endowments, mortgages and investments--your whole financial life in fact--and tidily regurgitates them in a tidy web browser style.

This exercise is a useful financial discipline in itself, forcing you to take a short hard look at your finances, and get organised. Money then provides figures on your net worth, your projected wealth in the next month, year or decade and give you hints on making your cash work better.

And the browser style makes it simple. You click links to take you to your bills and view quickly which are due (and which overdue). Click on accounts to see your current account, then click an Internet link to go online and download your account details from your bank, should you choose. Users of earlier editions, such as Money 2000 will find that 2001 seamlessly updates their existing files. --John Rennie

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for organising your finances but needs dedication   January 12, 2005
I have been using Money 2001 since it came out and have been very satisfied with it ever since. I've given it 4 stars as it can be a bit cumbersome to begin with but perhaps that is due to my complicated finances! It is very easy to use and it actually becomes quite addictive at the end of the day or week to see exactly where you stand and how your investments or debt are improving (hopefully!) Recommended if you want to get on top of your finances but you do need to work at it and be organised with input of data for it to work properly!

It's not only those with shares in every company who need to keep track of their finances. As a student heavily in debt with my student loan, money helps me keep within my monthly budget and helps me save towards the ultimate goal of clearing the student loan. If like me you need to convince your parents it's not all going on beer in the union bar then money's easy to use graphical packages give you a weekly, monthly, termly or yearly report to show exactly where your money has gone. Overall a must for any financially aware undergraduate.

I have used Money since Money 99 and have been hooked ever since. Its a neat product that offers all the useful features one needs to keep their home finances on track and in order. The one big problem I faced is upgrading. I owned Money 99 as a UK edition. When I wanted to upgrade to a Singapore edition, I couldn't and had to buy the entire package all new. Now, with Money 2001 I wish to return to the UK edition (thanks to my job) and Microsoft support says I can't buy the upgrade pack. Also, I experienced problems with Money 2000 which kept crashing my PC and when I called UK support, they asked me to call the country where i bought it from - Singapore!!

5 out of 5 stars Continues to sort out my life   January 16, 2001

I've had every version of Money since 1998 and it continues to improve. This version will even track your air miles! Most useful though, as I've not used it before, is the budgeting function. It takes a while to get used to and set up but once you've got it working can really help to show you how well you're spending and saving in particular categories. What makes it even better is if you get bar graphs on the money homepage stating how well you're doing against budget on your chosen categories. Very useful, if like me, you keep using 1-Click! There are lots and lots of options and on each subsequent upgrade of Money I've got used to more of them. Once you've learnt everything this package is really worth the money, it's an excellent product and so far stable and bug free. Sometimes you'll find that it's set something up wrong for you and you'll think it's a bug and hack about trying to fix it - that's just a consequence of the ease of use in certain cases.

A quality product with a lot to explore and configure but at the end of the day helps a lot with your personal finances.

I'm reviewing the Financial Suite version here, but most of what I'm saying applies to the standard version. Buy this or the Financial Suite version if you have shares.
