    Amazon.co.uk Review
Just balancing a cheque book is complicated--add a few investments and a budget, and you could start tearing your hair out. Microsoft Money 2001 Financial Suite, largely redesigned for easier navigation and customisation, is a step above its predecessors and miles beyond the old ledger and portfolio. With new features, such as user-set priorities, frequent-flier manager and Web browsing from within Money, it sets new standards for financial management software.

Installation is simple and stress-free. The file transfers are transparent, and entering financial information can be done in five to 10 minutes. Keep track of all of your investments, including ready cash, stocks, retirement funds, home equity and more--all in a well-designed Web-page format that integrates smoothly with other Web-based content. The home page is a pleasure, but the easily distracted should move the cash-flow charts and investment watch elsewhere, lest they be tempted to update them every few minutes. Pulling financial information off the Internet is usually easy (depending on your choice of financial service providers, of course) and you can port your personal data to a secure Web site for remote retrieval if you like.

There are a couple of minor drawbacks. For one, they have chosen to use their leverage to shill for MSN and other Microsoft-related services throughout Money. Also, users shouldn't rely exclusively on online statements, as download errors often, though certainly not always, result in interminable customer service calls. Other than that (and its large size--greater than 200 MB), it is hard to complain much. Families expanding their investments from checking and savings will love it, as will Internet traders and young adults who need a little coaching but can't afford a financial advisor. Microsoft Money Financial Suite 2001 will save you money in the long run, and save you time and frustration almost as soon as it's up and running. --Rob Lightner

    4 out of 5 stars Money 2001 - A path to financial freedom?   November 14, 2000

We all want to get control on our finances and finally get some good use out that investment in the PC we bought. Well, it's been over 5 years since I first installed Microsoft Money and I've never looked back. I've upgraded each time to the next version and I'm astounded by the additional features in each release. The major upgrade for me was the Money 99 to Money 2000. Suddenly I had major access to financial advice, investor boards, mortgage assessments and even links to the Taxman. The Microsoft Money suite provides me and my family a comprehensive view on our financial like and worth. It takes discipline to take out receipts and enter them into Microsoft Money, but with good will and a clear understanding of the product, you'll soon be tracking all expenditure and seeing who gets all your money each month. Setting up budgets is straightforward and assists with forecasting expenditure for the year ahead. The outstanding feature for me is the forthcoming bills and reminder. It looks at your pattern of spending and makes recommendations to set up bills which occur each month/week/day. Never miss a bill again (as if you would). The upgrade from Money 2000 to Money 2001 was uneventful and very simple. I would highly recommend the Financial Suite for those who track personal expenditure and have pensions, investments or endowments. I've spend the time to even key in all my assets, from the main residence all the way to TV's and fridges in the house. Yes, it has an inventory asset tracker. You can also store details of where important documents such as passports, wills etc are located. Last week I updated Wills for my parents, all through Microsoft Money 2001. The online services are improving with each release, more online banking services are available and there is the MoneyExtra section which monitors the markets and performance. Overall, I would rate this product as a "Must Have" for those considering getting a grip on their finances and tracking of where the money has been spent. The sad part is that I can see every transaction for the past 5 years. I must get my wife to cut down on buying magazines, over 2,000 spent to date. Invest now to protect your future.
