2 out of 5 stars Should be better   October 26, 2008

I was disappointed with this product. You would expect a lot more from Microsoft. It is basically an online course which you need to buy a disc to access. Look elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars Intensely Frustrating in all respects   October 23, 2008
I used to be a Trainer for IT Software.
I have awarded this 1 star because that is the minimum.
I found that even being online rather than downloading, completing and then synchronising the teaching modules it just does not work.
You complete the tests and in my case the same tests over and over again but it still shows as 74% completed for that module. I laboriously clicked every page to read it again but this had no effect. Emailing support they say allow 20 hours for an update to process. (Why ?).
A week later it was still not shown as complete and despite the text saying you can mark a module as completed I could not find out how (why not explain how on a training course after all).
A total waste of money but more important your valuable time.
I will not be completing it and can not recommend it. Buy a book instead.

2 out of 5 stars what the hack happened ?   October 16, 2008
As an ex MCSE I have always been satisfied with the MCSE study guides that were produced back in the late nineties /2000. The training was always concise and indded I remember working my way through Windows 95/98 and XP uing multiple PC's set up in my house and even when I started doing Server training I was satisfied. However I had huge expectations for this package ( i took both Vista and Sharepoint) and was enormously let down. I didn't feel I knew the material as well as when I studied and I don't feel there was enough depth in places and in others it was over too quickly. I think I am far better learning from a book where I can take my time and learn at my own pace than be guided through a media lesson. Plus there's the obvious advantage of a book where you can study on the train. :)

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing presentation from Microsoft but informative   October 5, 2008

This product is designed to train you in the operating system Windows Vista and is used for the MCAS exam (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator).

You must have a constant internet connection and email to use this training guide as it's all completed online. Remember to unblock popups from this site to do the training.

The voice for exlpanation is unusually very distorted almost like a Dalek (from Dr Who) and is at times unclear.

Although the products requirements are that you use Windows XP, vista or 2000, some of the initial training downloads require you to have Vista installed on your PC. This is misleading as I have XP and can't do a small part of this course.

The training consists of several information and training modules (a mixture of text based reading and movie material) that you can navigate around using a simple to use navigation bar. Objectives are clearly stated to inform you what you should have learnt by the end of each modules. Movie material can be paused, rewound, and skipped as you would expect. At the end of modules, you can perform self tests that query your knowledge.

Make sure you don't have many other applications open when starting this course as new windows pop up every 2 minutes filling your taskbar with un-necessary junk.

The course is aimed at those of you wanting to know absolutely all the ins and outs of the vista system including identifying, solving and optinmising your vista system, working with media, making connections, personalising Vista and getting the most from the operating system. It's a comprehensive course that will help you administer Vista operating system as a professional although it is poorly presented and disappointing.

I have to say as a frequent victim of corporate computer based training programs, that this is pretty banal- an hour and a quarter was enough to get me screaming for mercy. Now when I first started using Vista, a tour by what sounds like Forrest Gump's slightly smarter cousin, would have been just bearable. But Vista is pretty intuitive if you've used Windows before (apart from tracking down how to add/remove programs!). If I was desperate to sit this exam, I would much rather prefer to buy a book. As stated in other reviews, the CD just connects you to a website-you've just purchased 12 month's access in a standard DVD box. Hey ho- I'll see if the applications are any better- watch the appropriate space!
