| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.co.uk Review Encarta Encyclopaedia Deluxe is the new edition of Microsoft's bestselling reference tool, this edition bringing new features and loads of new content and add-ons, such as virtual tours. The interface itself is quite easy to get to grips with, although stylistically just a little bit boring. It is clean and uncluttered however, and because of this it moves quickly from screen to screen. The search is very good, and offers the functionality surfers are used to on the best search engines, such as word substitutions in case of misspelling and lists of similar entries, as well as loads of links to editorially screened non-Microsoft quality content sites, on specific topics. The Advanced Search functions as a filter, and lets the user search by type of entry, for example, Virtual Tour, animations, or charts and graphs, based on the subject/topic search terms entered in the left-hand bar. Those familiar with the Windows operating system will find navigating this software very easy. At the top is the usual toolbar, with File, Edit, View, Features, Tools and so on. The easy reach of these menus make moving around the software simple and stress-free, as well as quick to learn. The content is good, although encyclopaedias such as Britannica 2002 (DVD edition, Macintosh DVD) offer more authoritative content and more comprehensive coverage, but titles such as that haven't yet managed to offer it up in quite the excellent way that Encarta does. It functions more like a good documentary or comprehensive coffee-table book, which makes using it intriguing and pleasurable. The multimedia sections are fun, especially the 3-D virtual tours, in which the user can walk around ancient locations in the first-person, gaming style--Azuchi, castle of the ancient Japanese warlord, and the Colosseum are two of the seven available. There's a lot to enjoy about Encarta Encyclopaedia Deluxe, in terms of excellent usability, content and there's clearly been a great deal of thought given to how users actually want to access and use data, and it is probably the best designed package of its kind on the market. --Alison Jardine

Excellent content with lots of extras September 4, 2002 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought Encarta Deluxe 2002 for home use and have been very impressed. The content is excellent and there are quite a few extras that I enjoy a lot, such as the quiz/maze game and the interactive atlas. The timeline feature and dictionary are a great help on any projects. If you need to do research projects on a regular basis (and particularly for school projects) this is a fantastic product. You also get online updates that ensure your encyclopedia's content is up to date. Articles also contain weblinks to all sorts of websites containing more information on the selected topic. This allows you to extend your research beyond what's contained on the Encarta DVD/CD-ROM with relative ease (assuming you have a reliable/fast internet connection). There are a few things that I would like to see changed in the navigation and search tools, but all-in-all it is very easy to use and clear. Browsing between articles and the atlas is also useful and extremely easy. I have had a problem where an article contained some contradictory information and there is no support available for that sort problem, nor is there any opportunity through the normal support channels to make any suggestions. Although in my case it has to be said that I was able to eventually find the correct information by following one of the weblinks given. One other little extra that has quite impressed me, is the 'weather update' box on all country articles. If you're looking at the article on Thailand for instance you would see a box that shows the current weather situation in Thailand and a link to a weather forecast. Overall a very good product with lots of little extras that's a lot of fun even if you don't intend to do any specific research.
Encarta is brilliant! October 9, 2001 23 out of 25 found this review helpful
When i bought encarta 2000 a couple of years ago i was amazed, the many sound clips and videos surpassed my greatest expectations! But now Encarta 2002 is definately going to be better than ever, with even more virtual tours and up to date history files and much much more! And for just under 60 its a good price for something that could benefit all of the family for years to come! Enjoy!
