4 out of 5 stars Oil Change Sir?   December 1, 2008
I have used an earlier version of this at work for when people bring their laptops in complaining that they are running slowly.
Used in conjunction with a few other cleanup/maintenance tools..it does a very good job.
This new version is more impressive and has other features not found in the previous trial version I used..optimising and tune up functions which also seem to improve performance.
This version will also monitor your registry for changes...which can be both helpful and sometimes an inconvenience wuth pop up messages which you have to clear.

4 out of 5 stars Does exactly what it claims   November 27, 2008
Installed this and when run for the first time it found hundreds upon hundreds of problems on my laptop, and fixed nearly all of them. Brilliant and I was very impressed but after a re-boot and re-scan it found 12 problems that it couldn't solve (My anti virus software) and I couldn't tell it to ignore them, some of the other functions look good but just operate the existing Windows software (like De-frag) on the whole a good piece of kit just not worth the full 5 stars

1 out of 5 stars Not Good   November 23, 2008
I really hate writing negative reviews, but when you don't have much choice or you feel people should know about some of the problems you can get, then it does motivate a response. This software, in my eyes, can be really dangerous to your Windows OS if not used correctly. As other people have said it doesn't really do the job that well, and on a good PC that runs well, it can cause you problems in the registry.

I'm a firm believer that "if it aint broke, don't fix it" and in this case, I'm very much part of that school of thought. This really should be used for fixing registry errors. For example, on my media centre, I couldn't get further than the loading bar on Vista, so I popped it on and it fixed a key which allowed me to boot, whereas on my test bay computer, it did some bad things to my registry which didn't make it bootable. I had to reformat to get it to work again. So be careful to what you get this for.

To be frank I would suggest buying a decent imaging package like Acronis TrueImage or Norton's Ghost: reformat your PC; then install everything you need, and then use the imaging software to make an image on DVD. Now you can put your docs and files back on and enjoy your PC. It's a better investment than this, as it's real goal is to fix registry errors.

Remember though, always back up invaluable files like your documents and purchased music, as you might find it hard to recover it, and if the recovery software will get it back for you in the first place.

Seriously though, look elsewhere, this isn't worth the money or hassle it could cause.

3 out of 5 stars Aggressive but respected registry cleaner. Approach with care.   November 23, 2008

The Windows Registry can only too easily become clogged up with unwanted, invalid and orphaned entries which, over time, can severely impact your system's boot time and performance. My own preferred and recommended approach to avoiding these problems is to use a number of freeware programs : CCleaner, a safe, conservative disk and registry cleaner; Revo Uninstaller, which uninstalls unwanted software far more thoroughly and reliably than the Add/Remove Programs tool in Windows XP; and WinPatrol, which amongst other useful functions will monitor the registry for changes, and notify you when these take place. All three of these programs are popular, easy-to-use and regularly updated.

For those who want to take an even more vigorous approach to registry cleaning, there are numerous programs on the market. Of these, Registry Mechanic is one of the longest established and most respected, having won many press awards and favourable reviews. It is far more aggressive and thorough than CCleaner, but it does offer the option of automatically setting a system restore point inside Windows XP, before you begin. It will optionally monitor your registry for changes, and notify you about them, and it will flag any errors it finds with an estimated level of severity, to assist you in deciding what action to take.

I've been offered a free copy of Registry Mechanic so I've installed it and used it, and I do appreciate its merits, but on the grounds of time consumption and sheer riskiness, it's unlikely to replace my longstanding maintenance regime. It's only too easy to make very serious mistakes with an aggressive registry cleaner, which can far outweigh any small benefits from more rigorous cleansing.

If you feel happier about paying for your PC maintenance tools, and you want the cleanest possible registry, and you're willing to take the time to use this program safely, and to review all its recommendations carefully and selectively, then Registry Mechanic is one of the better choices you could make. If on the other hand you want to save money, you're far more concerned about visible system performance results than in knowing you have a spotless registry, you want a quick and easy maintenance routine, and/or you're too risk-averse to contemplate using such an aggressive program, then you'd be better off going down the alternative route I outlined earlier. The choice is yours.

4 out of 5 stars No problems at all!   November 19, 2008
Well what can I say? I had no problems installing this at all - no probs with registering it and no probs with having to give any account details.

I have it running on two machines at present - a laptop and a desktop - using the same key.

On my desktop it found over 800 problems - admittedly most of them low-priority - just lost threads etc but it cleared up all of these problems and all those on the laptop and both machines are working much better now.

So, unlike the other reviewers I'd have to say a thumbs up so far!
