1 out of 5 stars More Problems than without!   August 2, 2008

I bought this as i thought it would protect my computers - it almost destroyed them! I put it on a XP and then on a Vista.
The XP one could not connect to the internet at all. It took me hours of frustration only to find the internet once i un-installed it.
The Vista one was even worse. Not only did i lose the internet i almost lost my computer! Luckily i had a restore disk and i did it to 3 days earlier - it took hours but thankfully Kaspersky was gone and everything worked again. Phew!

Why is Anti-virus important? While the Internet is a great resource, harmful Viruses and other malware can be a real threat, not only because of the possibility of causing havoc on ones computer, but there could also potentially be a threat to personal details. The good news is, more computer users are becoming aware of this and are installing Anti-virus Software to protect themselves. This is partly due to Microsoft implementing the security centre in XP SP2 and Vista that pops up warnings if no Anti-virus software is installed, which is a good feature especially for the more novice. The bad news is, there's now a market literally littered with different Anti-virus solutions from various software providers, so knowing which is the best solution can be confusing. Some Anti-virus software claims to be effective, but independent tests may say otherwise.

Kaspersky stands in the shadow of more widely known solutions such as Norton and Mcafee, but don't be fooled Kaspersky is an effective Anti-virus solution and the cost is reasonable too here on Amazon. Kaspersky Install went smoothly for me on all three of my computers, this version of Kaspersky can be installed on 3 Computers. Kaspersky will work effectively from default, but there are settings that can be changed for the more advanced user. Kaspersky also feels light and by light, I mean it didn't slow my computer down like some other Anti-virus solutions. If you want a firewall too you'll need Kapersky Internet security, but Kaspersky Ant-virus will work alongside Windows Built in firewall just fine.

    Kapersky Anti-virus is highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars Not completely convinced........ but still excellent   March 6, 2008

Having previously used other popular anti-virus software, I did a review of all the reviews and Kaspersky 7 came top, so I decided to switch to it.

Plus points? Good value - especially considering it comes with a 3-user licence, so ideal for a desktop and couple of laptops. Reviews suggest it is currently the most effective package. Easy to install. Has found trojans/viruses attached to peer-to-peer downloaded music that others have missed.

Minus points? Although possible to install and forget, user interface is not maybe quite as intuitive as some of the competition, but really a minor grumble. Virus file updates from Kaspersky, although regular and small, download really slowly, and can cause problems with start-up. Also, XP and Vista versions detect different threats, which are probably safe but a minor cause for concern they don't detect in the same manner.

Overall conclusion? Well, it's made my system 100% safe and detected threats that other well known software has missed. Updates to combat new threats seem to arrive faster than from other companies. I think it is probably the best all round package available at the time of writing and only a minor grumble with the user interface stops me giving it 5 stars.

1 out of 5 stars Intrusive and dreadful support   February 4, 2008

I bought it because of the good reviews it has. Certainly the PC boots quicker than it did with Norton.

But it is extremely intrusive software. If you have a home workgroup-type network with 2 PC's, both with Kaspersky, then it disables that network completely. There is no setup guidance on this, nothing on their site, and their only tech support mechanism relies on submitting requests, which give an estimated time to answer of 1 day, and takes 5+. I fluked finding a post on a forum that explained the workaround, but only after wasting 5 hours, and it does seem to me that Kaspersky are actively concealing known issues regarding the effect on networking.

I am also unable to effectively to use IIS whilst it is running.

It has a component called 'Proactive Defence' which ostensibly watches out for suspicious behaviour by programs and warns you - however all it does is give you a file name that it does not like, and there is very little that can be done - my PC has 700,000 files on it, of which I guess 500,000 at least are programs or program-related - nobody knows what all these programs do, and finding out 10 times a day, by browsing the web, when you receive these warnings is a full-time job. They all always turn out to be false warnings about legitimate software, so there is no alternative but to turn this component off (this still leaves normal virus and spyware checking running) - from then on it gives you endless warnings that you are not properly protected.

Maybe it is good software if you are an uber-geek - if you are anything less than PhD level in how PC's work, go elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars excellent and efficient, highly recommended   February 2, 2008

I have used Kaspersky Antivirus 7.0 on my Win XP notebook for about 8 weeks, after having had the Kaspersky Internet Security Suite 6.0 installed on my old Win 98 PC for some 2 years without any problems, switching from McAffee to ZoneAlarm and then to Kaspersky and I noticed a considerable improvement of PC performance on the old machine after switching to Kaspersky, which still runs ok on the P3 750Mhz machine. On the notebook I have not noticed any drain on systems ressources, while it works smoothly and effiently in the backgroung.
On switchin from ZoneAlarm on my old machine, KIS picked up a few problems which went undetected before and I have not had any infections since, running Adaware and Spybot on demand scans as well from time to time, and no virus/spyware problems on the new machine. Virus file updates are frequent, several times a day.

KAV 7.0 is no longer compatible with Spybot but shows no prolems with Adaware on demand scans, not that they ever pick anything up other than some cookies and low grade marketing scanners, and it runs alongside Win Defender without conflict, and, quite frankly, it does not seem to require any additional spyware scanner.

KAV 7.0 is explicitly not compatible with ZoneAlarm free Firewall. It does work with Comodo free Firewall 3.0, but there are reported conflicts with earlier Comodo versions and some user forums have brought up occasional issues between KAV 7.0 with full proactive defensive features on as well as Comodo with Defense+ running, but none when these are tweaked and finetuned, or either Defense+ or KAV proactive features disabled and both of them would seem a bit of an overkill anyway.
I have KAV 7.0 running alongside Comodo 3.0 with Defense+ enabled, without any problems so far and no noticeable effect on systems ressources.
There is an extensive list of software incompatible with KAV 7.0 on the Kaspersky website/userforum, which contains mainly other antivirus products, as expected, and a number of other applications, but there is still choice and I reckon from my research that KAV + Comodo should give one pretty much the best of both worlds. However, the Kaspersky firewall in KIS seems to be pretty good and effective in my own experience and from reviews and user forums and is clearly free of conflict.

In summary: high detection rate, low usage of ressources and my experience with customer/technical support has been positive.
    Highly recommended!
