Not spectacular, but pretty good November 27, 2008 We all do it. We buy these products that we hope will make our computers do everything they were supposed to do in the first place but don't. TuneUp won't bring joy into your life, but it does pretty well.
It looks good. It loads easily, and you can understand it. If you're a computer whizz, you won't need it because you can do most of this stuff yourself (running Checkdisk for example) without any help from TuneUp. The rest of us need a little help. It only fails in its job of simplifying tasks with its Internet Optimisation, when it asks for your connection speed. People like me who need products like this are just the sort of people who'll have forgotten and won't know how to find out.
On my big PC running Vista Premium, I didn't notice much difference. But my daughter's XP laptop, overloaded with music, bugs and probably a bit of malware, was improved enormously.
Nothing special November 26, 2008 It promised to speed my computer up, make things easier and clean up my files. It didn't. May work better on a newer PC. I really wanted to say something positive - the box was nice!
Tune Up November 23, 2008 If you are looking to tune up the PC - then this suite of utilities seems to do it - and without any irreparable damage.
On first run - it reported many errors that needed fixing , e.g. , defragmented disks, orphaned registry keys and memory hogging services.
It gives the option to roll-back- which I tried - and it worked - so giving some trust that you don't break your system.
The disk tidying routine is good - and recovered a lot of space I'd never got round to doing manually.
One of the best features was identifying services which were running and using cpu/memory - that I could subsequently remove - like obsolete programs.
So - all in all it does what it says, but, is my PC now running at a blistering speed? To be honest - it doesn't "feel" any faster than before.
Maybe it deserves more than the 4 stars - as it does what it claims - but is the cost and effort worth the results unless your pc configuration is in a really bad state - and couldn't you make use of the standard OS tools to defrag disks etc?
So - the gains in having it tune the system, against living with obsolete files etc when disk space is no longer a premium are questionable - but some of us just like to know we have everything in good order.
It does have a single click maintenance function which does the all the common tuning functions quickly - which I press once a week or so just to fell better!
Got an antivirus? Now speed your PC up! November 20, 2008 The title says it all, really. This program isn't an antivirus and consequently, it won't protect you from nasties you happen to download (accidentlaly or otherwise) from the internet. I always like to make this sort of thing clear because I've fallen victim to mistaking programs to have an antivirus, only to find it doesn't have one. Try Kaspersky or Nod32 if you are looking for an AV program.
So what TuneUp Utilities does is in esscence, finds ways to speed up your PC or laptop (running Windows Vista or Windows XP) by tweaking your system here and there, cleaning up unused files which are hidden on your hard drives and performing certain other tasks which can make using your PC that little bit better.
In my experience with this program, all is well. The first time I told it to analyse my computer, it found lots of different things it could do to speed everything up. The most noticeable tweak was deleting hidden files buried on my main hard drive. About 80GB was freed up! How about that, one sixth of my drive's space used up on something I didn't even realise.
Things get better from here on, the registry cleaner is very handy and has improved the overall performance of my machine greatly. I really do believe it takes off years of neglectful PC usage in a few minutes. My dear old XP machine feels much leaner and my newer Vista machine is that little bit quicker loading programs and the like.
So all in all, if your PC is suffering a bit but hardware upgrades aren't really considerable, then this might just save your machine for another year or two. Stand back system-slowing antivirus programs, it's time for us to take back what's ours!
Easy to use November 20, 2008 This programme is simple to use and has performed a number of handy tasks. Among other things, it fixed a curious internet explorer problem that had the incorrect icons appearing beside my bookmarks. As for whether it offers much that web programs couldn't do, I'm not too sure. However, if you're looking to fix registry problems then it will certainly do the job for you.
