Very good, BUT only if you already know rules of chess November 1, 2008 This book says in the introduction: "I assume that you already know how to play chess and that you want to get better."
Uhm. Nope. I don't pick up Dummies books assuming I already know the subject. I pick them up to learn. So... not good book for absolute beginner.
But otherwise, this is a fine book. All the info needed to gain knowledge and improve. Good stuff for folks who already know how to play but want to get better, as the intro says.
Worth a look, but better material elsewhere November 9, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I, like the previous reviewer, was looking for a good refresher book having got hooked on the internet chess. Although well written, I felt it was organised badly, and there was not much material for the improving player (I accept that the book was not pitched at this audience).
I much preferred Byron Jacobs "Starting out in Chess", and as a further read "64 things you need to know in chess" by John Walker (the latter is particularly good, being easily digestible).
Worth a look at but better books elsewhere.

Before I read this book I was a chess loser. Having read this book I now win the occasional game. I now think that I could mount a credible challenge to some better players such as Peter Sharples
A Well Written Book With Limited Information On Chess August 23, 1998 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
I had not picked up a chess piece for more than ten (10) years so I was looking forward to reading this book as a "refresher course" in chess. I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED. While a very well written book (a rarity in chess literature) the information is confusingly presented and not nearly has helpful as "The Idiot's Complete Guide To Chess." My wife is a complete novice and she began reading this work so we could play chess together. She became so confused that she gave up reading this text in frustration. Therefore, I warn chess beginners that this book may not be the expected panacea. This work does have an excellant discussion of chess terms and a history of the top chess players with a list of these players best games. My apologies to you people who loved this book, but unfortunately I was very underwhelmed by this work.
This is where your addiction begins. July 4, 1998 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This lightly written, clear and concise book will tell you everything you need to know in order to start enjoying chess. After that it all goes downhill. You start saying things like "Hey, that story can be paralleled to a chess game I played yesterday!" , or maybe "Yeah, he's/she's cute, but they can't handle a queen's pawn opening to save their life..." I'm warning you now- it's NOT just a game. Have fun! :)
