5 out of 5 stars Complete chess training   July 1, 2006

This is probably the best book on middlegame and endgame strategy available.
It explains the way to judge positions in a systematic way. It summarizes methods in clear and easy to memorize rules.

There are two minor points of critique:
Some of the positions are too complicated and should be replaced with clearer illustrations. For instance: the endgame Botwinnik-Bronstein is chosen as a clear example of the bishop pair, while some variations that are not quit clear are not mentioned.

In the literature list, there is one glaring ommission:
Bonstein, Zuerich 1953 is missing, while it is perhaps
the best tournament book ever, and Bronstein's commentary
    retains it's significance even today.

That being said, you won't regret buying this book. Indeed
it will be a source of inspiration, during periods when, like
any other chessplayer, experiences a period of bad form.

5 out of 5 stars THE best book for REALLY learning to understand positional chess.   June 14, 2006

A lot of positive reviews are written for this book and having read it (and re-read it) myself, I can see why.

This book is nothing short of fantastic.

If you've ever wanted to understand chess in a positional context while learning a wholly useable method for formulating a plan of action and selecting the candidate moves that bring that plan to fruition then this is the book for you.

Mr.Silman manages to teach you these things with effortless skill using flowing examples and analysis all delivered with sparkling wit and good humour that make the learning a pleasure not a chore.

Useful nuggets of advice are littered through the text and he even gives you a full glossary of chess terms and an extensive recommended reading list covering every phase of the game.

Get a copy of the companion book - The Reassess Your Chess Workbook - too!

4 out of 5 stars It will HELP you to improve your chess   November 19, 2001

Working through this book will help all but the strongest players improve their chess - but you will have to work at it. In particular (as with all books like this) you will have to work through the games, analyses, problems, and think. My positional understanding has improved greatly since reading this book - and I'm too lazy to do what I've just told you that you have to do! I would have liked more diagrams, however. You really need a chess board in front of you.

5 out of 5 stars Very good though not easy   October 12, 2001

This is a great book. It will largely increase your positional understanding. I recommend to first read this book, then read The Amateur's Mind and then re-read this book. I found it not too easy the first time I read it, but it helped my understanding of strategy for sure. The second time I understood a lot more and my game improved a lot.
