    1 out of 5 stars BORING!   November 23, 2008
I tried to play tgis game, but it's so boring! I wish it would say that I needed a XBOX controller to play the game. Most of the games graphics is spent on intro's and crowds. No game modes, that you can do a career or do anything interesting. You can play an Olympics Mode where you play in the Olympics, whick I thought would be fun, untill I found out it took days to get through the Qualifying rounds, I gave up and sold the game.

    4 out of 5 stars Beijing 2008   August 20, 2008

I was looking forward with great anticipation to this game and whilst I was slightly disappointed as there are a few let-downs, it can be immensely fun to play.

There are 36 events in total, possibly the greatest number ever featured in an Olympics game, ranging from the good old track and field events such as the 100m and Javelin, to others of a more complicated/difficult nature such as 10m Platform Diving, the Canoe-Kayak-Slalom and Table Tennis.

The graphics are beautifully detailed for the most part, although antialiasing (smoothing to prevent jagged texture edges) seems to have been missed out somewhere along the line. However, that aside, there is a great amount of detail and the animations of the athletes and officials in particular really capture the atmosphere of the Olympics.

There are 3 game modes available, along with sub-game modes, and these are Training, Competition and Olympics. Training is precisely that and allows you to practice individual events with the aid of a visual tutorial before taking part in the latter modes. Competition allows you to select single and multiple event challenges to see who out of you and your friends, or competitors from further afield, has the stronger ability. Finally, the Olympics mode allows you to take your chosen country through the games, each day participating in new challenges to gain enough medals to take you to the top of the leaderboard.

The best feature of this game, for me, is the ability to play online against multiple competitors from around the world, with results recorded on digital tables that allow you to see where your performance rates overall. Believe me when I say this capability makes the game highly addictive.

However, there are some let-downs as previously mentioned. Firstly, the game requires a top-end pc to run it. The minimum processor speed supported is 2.4 ghz and the equivalent of a Nvidia 8800 is sure to count many potential buyers out.

The game REQUIRES (not reccomends)the Xbox 360 controller for Windows. Forget using anything else. The keyboard controls do not fulfil all the in-game operations and if you do use an alternative controller, like I did, you will find that the operations do not relate to your controller and you will not be able to undertake all the events.

Some of the event controls are complicated to master and you may find yourself not undertaking a few because of this.

A few other niggles are that the graphics could be smoother, despite still being the best seen in any Olympics game and you cannot change your in game name, which is irritating.

All in all however, the game is good and is sure to give you repetive strain injuries once you are addicted to the online game modes. I gave the game 4 stars because 3.5 is not available and 3 is not quite enough.

If you have the system requirements, are willing to splash out on the Xbox for Windows controller and have a fast internet connection, then get this game.

3 out of 5 stars Good game if you buy an XBox 360 controller for your PC   August 18, 2008

As a sports game fan I thought I'd give this game a go. And at such a low price I didn't mind taking the risk. I say risk as you never know with track and field type games what the control system is going to be like.

Well... initially I was disappointed as you can only use an XBox 360 gamepad/controller to play the game, unless you try with the keyboard (which means you risk smashing your keyboard to pieces!). It doesn't mention this on the box; it just says the game supports the Xbox 360 controller. Though... in the manual it does mention it. But you wouldn't know that until you'd bought the game!

Not wishing to let this issue spoil the game I put my hand in my pocket and bought from Amazon an XBox 360 controller that is compatible with the PC (comes with a driver disk). With postage the controller came to just over 20, and it is a very good controller (well made) so will be used with other PC games, not just Beijing.

    Link to controller: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Xbox-360-Common-Controller-PC/dp/B000BK4C80/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1219079678&sr=8-1

Having got my controller I have found the game to be great fun; plenty of button bashing, joystick waggling etc all in the great tradition of track and field games.

The graphics are excellent, the gameplay perfect and the control system not too hard to master.

My only other criticism is I haven't been able to find a way of changing my name in the game. The game automatically takes your PC's Computer Name and sets it as the players name. When I say Computer Name I mean the one displayed in System Properties within My Computer. So, if your computers name is DellOptiplexG85 or MyHomePC then that will be your player name in the game! Ridiculous really.
Plus you can't view your stats in the game, you have to go online to do it.

So, a small number of annoyances but if you can ignore them you will have plenty of fun with this game. Oh, and you can play head-to-head on one PC, over LAN or on the Internet with other players.

1 out of 5 stars The Worst Console Port EVER   August 16, 2008
5 out of 5 found this review helpful

This must be the laziest console port ever. They use the xbox 360 controller on the tuturials. Its impossible to play with a keyboard,
The controls are worse than bad and the control scheme changes on almost every event.
Stay away from this version, get the ps3 or xbox360 if you're thinking on buying this.
