1 out of 5 stars Awful customer service   September 3, 2007

Do not buy this product. I bought this Norton Upgrade in April 2007 but couldn't use it on my PC so asked for a refund. I could only get through to customer services with enormous difficulty, waiting up to 10-15 minutes to speak to someone. I called them four or five times, the problem was never resolved and I'm still waiting (September 2007) for my refund which I suspect will never arrive. The web site is poor, the product never worked and they have effectively stolen my money. There are much better products out there.

1 out of 5 stars OK for computer newbies who've bought machines more powerful than they need, but pros should avoid like the plague   July 10, 2007

Norton anti-virus used to be the de-facto antivirus system I recommended to everyone. 2004 was great, but when I upgraded to 2006, things started to slow down. However, when I upgraded to the bloatware that is 2007, things got really bad. I had loads of blue screens (more than 1 per day at first). After a few weeks of this, they released a patch which reduced the blue screens to one per week, which seemed great after what went before. I even convinced myself I had a memory bug, even though no memory checking software could find it, and WinDbg always pointed to the Norton Redirector being to blame. After much research I ditched the 18 months left of my NAV subscription and went to ESET NOD32. Much hard graft a registry deleting later, I managed to get rid of AV from hell. WOW! Suddenly it was like I had a new PC - things speeded up no end. I only got one more blue screen, but that was due to a bit of the Norton auto update that had refused to uninstall. I deleted that and now have a clean, fast PC again. Norton Antivirus used to be a great product, but now, like McAfee, only survives due to hype, marketing and (deteriorating) reputation. The product quality is far inferior to today's competition. I've heard of quite a few other people who've ditched Norton even though they had a lot of paid for subscription left. Certainly, nothing with the name "Norton" or "Symantec" is ever getting installed on any of my machines ever again.

5 out of 5 stars simple and efficient   February 8, 2007

Just what I needed. Norton AV offers me simple and straight forward protection against viruses and other malware. All it took was the installation as well as a quick upgrade via the download offered to get the software up-to-date on all the latest viruses.

And now the program controls not only my web-browsing but also all my e-mails to ensure that I will not download a virus to my PC. Accessing both incoming and outgoing e-mails is a great feature - I like the idea of not sending out viruses to friends and family!

5 out of 5 stars Upgraded virus protection   January 18, 2007

I've upgraded my copy of Norton AntiVirus and am very happy with what I see. The broad range of features ensures that I will be save from worms, viruses, spyware and rootkits.

Especially the latter function is a recent addition from Norton that responds to the ever changing threats that users will encounter on the internet.

1 out of 5 stars Highly expensive and inadequate   December 12, 2006

I have found Norton Anti-virus to be continually unreliable over the years, and very expensive considering that once your download time runs out you have to pay to renew it. I now use AVG free edition which doesn't crash my PC, doesn't take up resources, and actually finds all viruses. It picked up many viruses on my PC that Norton had been ignoring all this time. I found the same issue on the PCs of several friends too and insisted that they don't pay for Norton's anti-virus when AVG or Avast are better, and most importantly, free with unlimited free updates.

Norton isn't good enough, costs too much and constantly requires people to cough up money for upgrades.
