A agree with all the others who posted negative reviews - not only did it slow the computer to a standstill, performing scans constantly, but after un-installing it I found that it was still running a process in the background with I had to remove manually, along with a lot of other files the uninstall had failed to remove.
I would also like to complain about the large number of so called reviews that read suspiciously like adverts for anti-virus programs. Anyone who has used this product could not reasonably give it five stars. What proceedures does amazon have to prevent interested parties writing fake reviews?
Many of the five star reviewers seem entirely certain that 'norton protects against all viruses/spyware etc - how can they know that?
The basis of the service 'norton' provide amounts to extortion of money by threat/fear. They should be in prison.

When I first purchased a PC waaay back in october 2006, I purchased NIS 2007 on the belief that Norton were a reputable company and maker of fine PC software. The program did install quite easily, although some software we recieved free with ours, Norton GoBack and another one that I cannot care to remember immediately had problems running ALONGSIDE each other (and just about everything else on the computer) and were promptly dicarded (my decision came after a particularly fine performance on BF2142 was interupted by Norton GoBack asking me if I wished to back up my documents... this huge resource eater coupled with an already demanding game caused my PC to lock up. I shouted at my PC for a while, then shouted at the manual for Norton which was COMPLETELY useless, then shouted for a longer while at the moronic advice of the support centre: "Have you tried restarting your computer?" "Um, yes, quite a few times now. But I assure you, my PC runs fine, I just want to l know how to turn this crappy program off" "oh..um..."). It is slow, game unfriendly, expensive compared to the competition and the customer care is useless. Admittadly the actual NIS software is quite intuitive and easy to use, but it is very shallow and does not allow for a lot of choice in how it tyrannically dominates your PCs resources. I have just ordered my copy of AVG IS 7.5 now the Norton liscence has run out, based on the superb reviews it has been getting and the truly awesome trial version I installed on my second and new PC, and cannot wait for it to arrive. On that basis, I recommend not buying this (or McAffees, which is worse) but instead spending your hard earnt on AVG 7.5 (another two programs reckoned to also have some merit are Nod32 and Kasperskys, though im afraid I dont know too much about these. Worth a look though if you do not like AVG). Conclusion: Norton 2007 makes your computer fat and useless and I will not be upgrading to 2008.

I purchased Norton 2004 and 2005 and became annoyed with the apparent drain on my PC's performance. So in 2006 I decided to try something different. After surfing the web I convinced myself that "Bitdefender" was worth a try. I was sadly mistaken. It was (in my opinion) worse than Norton. So, in 2007 I returned to Norton thinking "I guess the grass is not always greener". However, in the past few months my Windows XP machine has just started to crawl - the startup time (after Windows starts and you can actually do anything) is ridiculous and even the time certain apps take to start up (like Windows Explorer) is massive.
What's worse, 9 times out of 10, soon after I boot up, Norton crashes with an "Auto Protect Error". I have searched the web and this is NOT uncommon. And the best of it is - there is no solution to it?!? All Symantec do is force you to make sure your virus definitions are up to date and then restart. In reality they just want you to restart but know that you need to feel as if you have done something.
I was foolish to come back to Norton and if you are even considering then please, learn from my mistake, don't bother. I am going to try AVG next - I have read very good things particularly about the amount of system resources it uses.

I have the same exact problem with repeated live update sessions and still unable to start auto protect. The tech support is absolutely as bad as the previous reviews. Completely worthless. I also had a recent issue with updating the subscription. Symantec sent me a mailer 1 month before my subscription expired prompting me to renew. I hadn't had trouble to that point so I clicked thru and renewed. So far so good. Upon the 1st anniversary (just 1 month later) of the original subscription I get an email from Symantec stating that my credit card had been charged for the auto renewing subscription. WHAT?! Yup charged me twice. I could never get through to anyone on the phone. I was on hold for more than one hour on one attempt. I tried on line chat but no one ever answered. Finally I had to send a blazing email to get a response from someone. An email was returned telling me the value of staying current and I should let auto renew stay on. Of course I pointed out my problem wasn't that I didn't want to renew and that my problem was I paid twice for the same subscription. He never did get it but removed the charge for the auto renew. This is bordering on fraud in my opinion. Set the subscription to auto renew by default, send a mailer out prompting for an online renewal, and then the auto renew charge. I can see how someone may miss this fact and never get the charge removed. Since I asked they gladly removed the charge but never did admit to charging me twice. They just kept going on how important it is to stay current.

Product that absolutely does not protect against viruses. AVG Antivirus found 6 Trojans that Norton failed to spot.
'NORTON HAS ENCOUNTERED A PROGRAME ERROR'continually appearing and shutting itself off leaving your system unprotected.
Hours and hours trying to resolve the problems created by Norton.
Customer care team that appear to be indifferent to your problems with Norton.
Is it really worth your money, time and sanity?
I think not, do yourself and your PC a favour, don't bother with Norton.
