NetObjects Fusion is an easy-to-use Web authoring package aimed at those who want to get good results without having to learn the intricacies of HTML. More than just a page-design tool, Fusion also handles site management and uploading to remote Web sites. But you should look elsewhere if you prefer to hand-roll your HTML or require the last word in advanced features. Fusion shows a Web site in one of several views. In Site view, it is shown as an organisation chart, where individual pages can be added, deleted or moved. Fusion automatically generates link buttons. Page view is where users add text, graphics, tables, or more advanced objects such as Java applets or ActiveX controls. The beauty of Fusion is that page layout works in the way users expect, with objects staying where they are put. Fusion Styles allow a predefined design scheme to be applied to a site and, while the range is not huge, the quality is good. The Assets view shows resources such as images, multimedia or database files. Finally, Preview and Publish options let you test and upload your work. There is a range of settings to cope with the problem of browser compatibility. It is also possible to generate static pages from external data held in products such as Access or Excel. This product stores Web pages in its own database format, only generating HTML when the site is previewed or published. The weakness of this approach is that the HTML code cannot be edited directly, since any changes will be overwritten. There are ways around this, but to get the best out of Fusion users should stick with its design tools. For fast, professional results, Fusion is hard to beat. --Tim Anderson

Best Budget Web Design Tool December 31, 2002

I have recently done a Web Design course using Macromedia Dreamweaver. There are a few clever things that can be done using the Macromedia suite, that you can't easily do with Fusion MX, but on the other hand it will take you less than half the time using Fusion and will have cost you about a tenth of the price.If you are wishing to build a simple, clean, professional looking web site, that is simple to maintain and expand this is the product to choose. My son and I have built 2 large and 1 medium size web sites in the last year using Fusion MX and low cost Serif graphics tools and encountered few problems or limitations. The process is very simple. Fisrtly you concentrate on the look and structure of your site. There are a wide range of standard templates that you can use, but it is very simple to build up your own custom design. Once this is done, it is simply a matter of putting your content within the page templates.

I have used Fusion MX fo more than a year before upgrading to Fusion 7 about six months ago.Pros (MX): efficient and very fast creation and maintenance of web sites, easy to change even complex hierarchies of pages. Easy to learn, easy learning-curve. Very well-written and comprehensive manual. The sort of software you actually look forward to using. Cons (MX): no real database integration. Large tables imported from Excel makes MX unstable (to a large extent rectified in version 7 which adds a photo gallery feature and other nice improvements, but still does not provide true database integration). Verdict: Great features, great implementation...

I have tried every web creation program and web editor. I like Dreamweaver a lot - they all have different strengths - but NetObjects Fusion (an HTML creator) is definitely the quickest tool, and the most fun to use. It has a unique way of managing a site which means that the framework of even large webs can be constructed in seconds. Within the program you just design freely, putting color, text, images and scripts wherever you want them. Fusion does the tricky stuff behind the scenes, and produces elegant websites that work. Add to this, the program can even make the graphics as it goes along, enabling you to shift pages around at will, whilst always getting a freshly buttoned navigation bar (expert tip - I often make a dummy web site just to get bulk named navigation buttons. Quicker than using an image editor, when you are in a real hurry!)
While this company is being sold, availability of MX is fluctuating. This is their best release ever, and copies are disappearing fast. If you want the best web creation program ever, you need to decide to buy now. I doubt you'll go back to anything else.
Brilliant package for new and advanced web designers August 14, 2001

NetObjects Fusion is a brilliant design package. It offers everything a newcomer needs and also has the advanced features needed for the more experienced web designer. As well as page authoring, it offers full site management and you can organise your files/pages/directories (Yes, you can create 100% customised infra-structure) in any way you want before publishing to the web and all links and directories are generated automatically for you. NetObjects also has several third party products that is designed for NetObjects eg database integration, graphics changers, etc... I have not come across any such features in Front Page or Dreamweaver. I first started with NetObjects three years ago and I'm hooked on it!!!

I've had an imported version of Net Objects MX for a while now, and have to say it's the best web design package I've come across, even compared to the likes of Macromedia's Dreamweaver - it has the rare quality of pairing together an intuitive interface while still allowing a great degree of flexibility and freedom. The two main points it seems to have head and shoulders above its competition are that the interface is entirely desktop publishing based, as opposed to the limitations of "left, right, centre..." packages like Front Page. Also, the links on each and every page you build on a site are dynamic so when you make changes, every other page is automatically updated to reflect the changes without you having to manually go and do it yourself. It might take a couple of hours to get used to the package, but coupled with the excellent manual, you'll have sites up and running in no time at all.
