Held back by lack of UK postcode updates June 11, 2008

We use this product at my company heavily to find distances between postcodes and generate maps. It is in general a reliable product and keenly priced compared to alternatives.
HOWEVER, the lack of updates to UK postcodes (which change quite frequently) causes us headaches. Whole postcode sectors are now missing as the data goes back to 2006. Why Microsoft can't give away (or sell) a downloadable yearly update for registered users is beyond me. You get this with Satnav software (at a price) so they are missing out on revenue. A lazy attitude from Mr Gates and co.

MapPoint 2006 - Autoroute with extra functionality!. It can be used for route planning as per autoroute but has the additional functionality of being able to import date from postcodes.
Great for mapping sales territories, and customers. Would recommend.

MapPoint is designed to facilitate the geographical visualisation and analysis of either included data or custom data. 2006 has much updated GPS features. There seems to be a slight problem with using full postcodes, but there is a fix, and may be corrected in an update.

As other reviewers have correctly pointed out there is a quite a serious glitch with this software, as it incorrectly plots imported postcodes, however there is a quick workaround simply convert your postcodes to lowercase and everything will work correctly. This can be done using =LOWER(ref) in excel.
This programme still represents really good value for money for basic mapping of territories and customers etc when you consider that you would normally pay [...] to [...] for a set of postcode files.
Should be aware that you can not update the postcode files in the programme so new postcodes like CB22 can not be plotted.

Like the other reviewer, I can't recommend software that doesn't work. The UK postcodes on the map are incorrectly geocoded so there is no telling where your postcode may be drawn. Microsoft have advised me that they are aware but that they will not fix until the next version. Unfortunately, it is only really the postcode function that separates this from autoroute et al. Suggest you stick with 2004 version at all costs even though it is out of date.
