1 out of 5 stars I wish I had never heard of Vista   June 25, 2010
    Choosy (uk)
I have found Vista simply "not fit for purpose".

MY biggest mistake was to give up XP.

I purchased a new computer with Vista just over a year ago. During the whole time Vista has been a real pain in the backside. It was incompatible with most of my equipment and software which has resulted is having to upgrade everything at BIG additional costs. Problems solved - not at all....

My Vista system crashes regularly on almost a weekly basis without any cause or warning. I have used computers right from from the days of Sinclair, Commodore Pet 64 right through to the present day high flying machines and up until Vista I have usually been able to sort most issues. Even if I resort to paying for "professional" help after numberous wasted hours they still are unable to resolve the issues any quicker or better than I, if at all. I associate with many professional IT people and I have yet to find one who has anything positive to say about Vista.

I often have to revert back to using an eight year old laptop with XP installed just to get my work done on time. This simply shouldn't be !

Normally, when one buys a new piece of equipment or service which is "not fit for purpose" it would be expected for the responsible company to provide the solution free of charge. Microsoft has introduced an operating system thats so unstable that I'm dammed if I'm going to fork out any more money to rectify what most people agree is a flawed operating system.

It's a cheek and a disgrace that Microsoft expect the users to purchase the additional and extremely high price charged for Windows 7 to rectifly the faulty Vista software. Microsoft should be accountable and concede that they have not been fair to it's previously loyal customers.

My future purchases will definitely not have any more Microsoft products.

3 out of 5 stars not best os to work with   January 21, 2010
    S. C. Ramsbottom (Oxon, UK)
Though I haven't tried others in the Vista range I can't recommend this as a fast and easy OS. A few reasons. The install takes a very long time. It takes around an hour initially, followed by 65 updates. The updates total around 255mb. Lots of updates are needed following this, making it somewhat of a hog.

Graphically Vista is a breath of fresh air. If your used to XP then this requires 1GB ram. I have been running it on a Dell Dimension 3100c tower with 2GB ram (upgraded from 512mb). One thing that can't be over-emphasized is the regular updates needed, so those used to this kind of process will be prepared.

I do feel rather pleased with this OS however in some ways. I have spent many happy minutes scouring control panel items, such as Update, and Security Centre. It looks professional, and for those who do not require the best then I can guarantee it is stable once up to date. I look forward to trying Windows 7, which I have heard is more resource-conscious than Vista.

2 out of 5 stars Windows Vista Home Rubbish   December 15, 2009
    Benjamin Howe (United Kingdom)
Vista is RUBBISH! On my laptop, I have Windows Vista HP, and it is dead slow. The laptop in question is a Sony Vaio VGN-NR21Z. This has 3GB RAM, 2.1GHz Duel Core prosessor, and 256mb dedicated graphics memorey. Not to be messed with. Running under XP (thanks for including a DOWNgrade CD - XP is so much better than vista), its lightning quick - Need for Speed Shift runs fine at full screen. Without downgrading, however, you have to run shift at 800x600. So, IF you want to buy vista, then insted buy:

*XP if you have a tight budget
    *7 if you want security
*Vista if you want to be able to mistake your PC for a slug!

3 out of 5 stars Product OK. Service chaotic   December 2, 2009

The product is OK. However it came with the offer of a free upgrade to Windows 7 which so far hasn't worked - all sorts of hassle with the promotional codes. I wish I had had the time to go to PCworld to get the same offer.
