This really has produced a big improvement on speed on my MBP running Snow Leopard. The support for Windows Vista and Windows 7's "Aero" display mode and Directx has transformed the softwares performance with Windows. I now find that I am using Parallels new "Crystal mode" more and more, this mode effectively integrates/hides windows and allows windows programs to appear like a native Mac app. I am very impressed that this upgraded software gives real gains and improvements over their previous versions.
It is also better value I believe from Amazon, than buying direct from Parallels. For only a few pounds difference you get a "real" product rather than a downloaded file. (Much better to have a disk for restoring ect). You can download a trial from Parallels website to prove it for yourself, but come back to here to buy!

I main reason to purchase the Parallels Desktop 5 upgrade (from 4) was the claimed increase in performance with Mac OS X Snow Leopard. In this regard it does not disappoint. Certainly my PC applications open and run much faster. There is better integration with your Mac and PC Virtual Machine as well.
Those of us who also use Apple Time Capsules can also choose not to back up Windows in the preferences. This is a useful feature as it prevents Time Machine trying to back up the whole of Windows every hour. 13gb on Windows XP, more if you use Vista
However when I upgraded from Parallels 4 to 5 and tried to open Windows XP I was repeatedly greeted with the Windows blue screen of death. After 20 minuets of frustration Parallels tech support had the answer. IF YOU HAVE PARALLELS 4 CONFIGURED WITH MORE THAN 1 CPU YOUR VIRTUAL MACHINE WILL NOT WORK AFTER THE UPGRADE TO PARALLELS 5.
The solution to this is to revert Parallels to 1 CPU before upgrading (you can do it afterwards too). Once Windows has opened and the new Parallels tools have been installed you can change back to multiple CPU's
I had some hassles hence a star removed but for me the upgrade has been well worth it in the end

This is an excellent update of Parallels Desktop 4.0.
One little personal thing, is the use of expose, if you move the mouse cursor over the top left of the screen it shows the Mac desktop (looks like a page turn of a book), when it is clicked it returns back to the Mac desktop, but it resizes the virtual OS and all the desktop icons are moved. I personally disabled it within the configuration of Parallels Desktop and use the expose built into Mac, I think it is a lot better, as it shows both side by side and doesn't mess up the desktop icons on the virtual OS.
I have used both VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop and Parallels Desktop wins hands down.
