5 out of 5 stars Does what is says on the box.....but you have to as well!   November 21, 2008

After reading the past reviews I was sceptical, but had a fast pc above the minimum specifications and had no trouble at all. The files are copied easily and I had no problems with audio delays. If people are buying this product they will be very satisfied just ensure your PC meets the software needs as spelled out in the description. All the negative comments I bet are from people with old pcs!

5 out of 5 stars Create great Xmas presents for your family   November 21, 2008

I've just finished creating some great DVDs of my kids that I know will be perfect for grandparents as a fun gift for Xmas. It is so easy to use, take the time to check if your PC meets the requirements:

    Microsoft Windows XP/Vista
Intel Pentium 4 from 2 GHz or comparable AMD processor
    512 RAM
1GB hard disk memory for program installation
Graphics card with DirectX 9.0 support and a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768
    USB 2.0 port
    Sound Card

Don't be put off thinking its difficult to use, it's dead easy, and great value.

    1 out of 5 stars Awful!   November 11, 2008

Warning, this product has to be the biggest disappointment I've ever bought. After copying a home movie to my computer, it appeared that the video and audio got gradually out of sync with each other. Therefore making it near enough impossible to correct. Following the instructions again I got the same result still.

Frustrated I go to the Magix forum, it appears a lot of other customers have the same problem, some posts being 9 months old with no solution or answer to their query. I write to magix directly and get a response a day later saying they'll get back to me. A month later I still haven't heard from them. I've returned it and got a refund. Customer service is non-existent, be warned.

5 out of 5 stars Very simple, yet versatile and great value   November 1, 2008

I was looking for a way of getting my family's old camcorder tapes on to DVD and, after comparing a number of products, plumped for this one. It was very easy to set up and a built-in demonstration video takes you quickly through all necessary basics. The instructions are short but well written.

The included editing software is intuitive and gives you many options for either simply burning the video straight to DVD or spending more time on it and putting together a professional-looking final product. Within a couple of hours I had captured and edited a section of camcorder video; added titles and fades and burned it to DVD with tailored menus.

'Rescue your Videotapes!' did exactly what I wanted it to.

3 out of 5 stars Only useful if you have a good enough computer   October 27, 2008

Having thought my PC would be able to cope with running this program I was sadly mistaken. Even though it met minimum requirements I could only capture the recording at VHS quality. Any higher and the sound would stutter. Even at VHS quality I noticed sound lag compared to the picture. I even downloaded the new XP service pack 3 compatible drivers from the Magix website but that caused the software to only allow selection of the soundcard drivers and not those for the USB capture device!
Lucky for me I have a newer laptop which has an AMD Sempron processor, AMD processors I am led to believe are the better chips for handling graphics programs. Anyway I installed the software on that and was able to capture video at DVD quality with the processor only running at 50% capacity. Having captured the video successfully the software comes into its own, allowing you to create DVD menu's and chapter selection screens, onto which you can import your own pictures and music. Be prepared to wait a long time to write the final project to disc though, for a half hour recording it took just over 1 hour to encode and write the data to disc, which for some reason required MPEG2 activation from Magix via an emailed code. Also be prepared for the recording to take up a lot of hard drive space. The half hour recording took up 2 gigabytes of space! Playing back the recorded DVD is just like any other and the picture and sound seemed to be in sync.
The software does have other bonuses, you can import DVD or video files and alter them amongst other things.
Like many others have said the Magix support website isnt very helpful and if i hadnt had the laptop which solved the problems, I like others would have sent this product back. As it is when I sent an email request they wanted me to download a fault finding program even though I gave explicit detail as to what went wrong. They dont even have a dedicated forum of any worth for this particular product. When the product works it does the job well but when it cripples your PC trying to run it it is poor. To be honest you should only consider this solution if you have a dual core processor with lots of memory, a decent graphics card and a fairly large hard drive!
