2 out of 5 stars Beware: set up procedure and long term quality problems   November 25, 2008
0 out of 1 found this review helpful

My first Netgear 834G died after just two years - doesn't seem very long compared with other IT equipment I have. Netgear sent a free replacement, good. To set this up took three days of attempts to get it working (reflecting difficulties with setting up my original 834). In the end, I spent almost three hours on the phone with two different Netgear engineers - one from the sub-continent and difficult to understand, and one from LA, very helpful and knowledgable, who took a further 40 mins to fix the set up problem.
The installation and set up material is entirely inadequate and contradictory, and assumes professional understanding of procedures and acronyms. It doesn't suggest using a professional to install it, which I would recommend. It works, but the hassle is too much.

5 out of 5 stars All the features and simple   November 25, 2008
Nothing bad to say about this router, does a great job.

Setup via a web browser. Don't bother installing the supplied software if you don't want to, it just clutters up your PC.

Netgear still providing firmware updates, a problem with PS3 not working with WPA has been resolved.

5 out of 5 stars Works like a dream for the PS3   November 13, 2008
I've only had this router a day but so far so good. I cannot comment on reliability but no dropped connections as yet. I bought the Netgear router because my old Zyxel P660HWt1v2 router wouldn't allow any ports to be forwarded (even though it should) to my PS3 - which meant some of my multiplayer games wouldn't work online. Apparently, uPnP (universal plug and play standard, for port forwarding) is not the most robust or reliable of standards therefore for some games/applications ports must be forwarded manually (or your PS3 put in the DMZ of your router, although DMZ is not recommended as it exposes your PS3 to hackers). With the Netgear Router I still have the same problems with certain games not working online using uPnP - it's not the fault of the router - but at least now I can resolve these problems by doing the port forwarding myself manually. So far all of my PS3 games work online with the Netgear Router (with a few port forwarding tweaks) - only about half of my games worked with my old Zyxel router, regardless of the port forward/firewall rule settings.

One niggle is that I had to download a firmware update before the Router would work properly - not a good thing when you're going through a manual set-up. Took me around 1 hour to connect a PC and PS3 - to work correctly. I cannot comment on the wizard set-up - I didn't bother with this as I'm reasonably familiar with router configuration and knew I'd have to make lots of manual settings changes anyway for my particular network.

All in all I'd highly recommend this router for the PS3 - and N0 problems working with my PC either!

    3 out of 5 stars Beware the Set-Up Wizard Loop !   November 12, 2008
If you choose to use the set-up wizard rather than manually configuring this box be absolutely sure you have correct ISP details and a working internet connection. I made a mistake on the initial entry of my ISP password, after which the thing went into an endless loop, constantly redirecting the browser from any attached PC into its own set-up wizard, but never completing. Even though I then got connected, Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera were all unusable in this state.
The solution to this is to press the hard reset button on the Netgear, go back into the wizard from the start and then take the "No thanks - I'll do it manually" option (or however they word it).
Otherwise - it works fine ! Coverage seems no worse in my house (brick built 20s semi) than the supposedly more advanced 834PN (rangemax model) which it replaced. Let's hope it doesn't die after 2 years as that one did...

5 out of 5 stars Simple Setup!   November 11, 2008
When my friend asked me to help set up a wireless router to use with his BT broadband account, he first of all tried to obtain one direct from BT. Unfortunately BT had no stock of the Netgear 834 model so I got him one from Amazon (via Pixmania) for a lot less money! Then I suddenly realised that this would not be supplied with the BT installation disc and neither would BT offer telephone support if we needed help installing it as they had not supplied it. So I was dreading last Monday evening thinking I would end up wishing I hadn't offered my services!
Anyway, I need not have worried. All I had to do was connect the thing up, enter his BT email address and password and that was it. Almost instant connection to the internet. Next job was installing the Netgear wireless adaptor (slip the CD in and follow directions). After a couple of minutes the laptop had communicated with the router and we were online - wirelessly! I need not have worried (as I had been!) about configuring the router as it all seemed to happen automatically. Setting the wireless security was a little more tricky but otherwise the whole process was a piece of cake. Just a word of caution - as this item was supplied by Pixmania from France (via Amazon) you need to buy UK filter/splitters if you need them. However, Pixmania did include a two-pin to 13 amp plug adaptor for the mains transformer.
