Quite apart from the joy of going cordless (a bit like walking around the house naked, not necessary but the freedom feels great) the keyboard has a lovely feel and the wrist rest is very comfortable. The mouse is great, although unfortunately I have a clear perspex sheet protecting my leather desktop which complete foxes the laser so have to use a mouse pad. The additional buttons are great once you start to get in the habit of using them, so nice to just hit a button to skip a music track without having to navigate to iTunes. The one button press to hibernate, open e-mail, open My Pictures etc are also great. I know it may sound extremely lazy but you wait until you've got used to them, you'll wonder how you ever did without them too!

This is a replacement for my aging Logitech Desktop MX. I do also have the MX5000 which I found to be unreliable and basically annoying as it kept losing the mouse and keyboard. This set is better but the mouse doesn't feel as nice as the MX5000 mouse and its not rechargeable like the MX5000 or my older MX. If I had known the mouse wasn't rechargeable I would probably have bought the Microsoft 6000 V2 instead. Guess I should have paid more attention to the spec.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best   February 2, 2007

This about the sixth keyboard/mouse combination I've bought in the last couple of years and it is far and away the best.

I was about to order the latest wireless keyboard/laser mouse from Microsoft when luckily my PC mag published a very comprehensive review and the Logitech MX 3000 was the clear winner.

To be honest it is worth getting the keyboard just to experience the best key action you can buy. It is true that the keyboard initially appears rather flat instead of being canted towards you - I have noticed that I sit up more when I type instead of lounging back - this has to be good and my typing speed accuracy has much improved.

The mouse is a delight too with light yet positive controls (and there are a lot of them) and a beautiful gliding action. It is incredibly accurate if, like me, you need pin-prick accuracy for some of your applications.

We then come onto what I can only call the "gadgets" - a rotary "volume" control which actually is not so easy to use as buttons and a "close program" button which is countersunk so you don't press it by accident and therefore is a little difficult to press at all - but at least all these buttons can be reprogrammed, if you can think of a better use for them and can still remember what they do once the little picture is no longer relevant.

Every manufacturer has this kind of stuff on their keyboard but for me you could junk it all and save an inch or two of keyboard depth. By the time you remember you have a button to open your email program you have probably launched from your tray.

But I digress - if you want the best keyboard and mouse on the market buy this. If you want funky buttons you'll find lots of these too.

4 out of 5 stars Great value for money   January 31, 2007

Given that the full features of this keyboard/mouse combo are not properly described (or viewable in the picture), I shall start by going them, describing the good/bad sides of each along the way.

The mouse is NOT suitable for left-handed users due to its asymmetry. However, you can potentially use a different mouse (see later) if you wanted to.
If you're like me and use your middle finger for a scrollwheel, and your ring finger for right-click, then you might find things a bit cramped, as the buttons aren't huge. The intended use is clearly for the middle finger to be used for right-click, but it's not too bad.
In addition to the usual two buttons + scroll wheel, there was an extra button operated by the thumb of right-handed user. This can be configured to any of huge list of functions. I have mine set up to mimic a "shift" key, as shift+left click opens a link in a new window in Internet Explorer. The scrollwheel can be re-configured in the same way, though I kept it in normal scrollwheel mode.
The mouse is perfectly responsive, more so than many other opticals. Mouse speed/acclerationcan be set as per any other mouse in Windows (via the control panal).

The keyboard is a standard UK 105-key layout (i.e. no power/sleep/wake up keys above the arrow keys), plus "extra" keys around the edge. The "win" and "Mac" keys are marked in the usual way.
On the left of the capslock and tab buttons are the "iNav" keys. These comprise a scroll wheel (like a wheel on a mouse), a browser "back" button, and a browser "open webpage" (in which you type the address of teh page you wish to go to; or the location a local programme/folder you wish to open). Usefull shift+back = browser "forward" - just like the backspace key).
Just to the left of the escape key is small button marked "user". This brings up the computer shut-down options and is usefully recessed to avoid being pressed accidentally.
The function keys double up as various shortcuts for office, emailand browsers. Using these shotcuts requires pressing the "f-lock" button, which needs to be pressed again to return the function keys to their normal roles.
Above the function keys in the middle of the keyboard are the multimedia buttons. These are nice and large - ideal for controling music or DVDs when you have the keyboard somewhere otehr than the desk. There is a volume "wheel", plus track back, track forward, play/pause and stop buttons. There is a small "mute" button, plus a "media" button. Pressing the "media" button brings up a list of media players on your computer for you to select (via the arrow keys) and run. (This intially didn't work - look for the "Cordless Desktop(tm) iTouch(tm)" on Logitech's website, and download the latest software version).
Either side of the multimedia buttons are a total of eight fully customisable buttons. These can be configured to open any program or website. (You can also make it open any folder by selecting the "program" option, and then entering path of the program as "explorer.exe" followed by the path of the folder you wish to open). Also, any button can be configured to bring up a menu when you can select from a list of fully customaisable actions (open program / webpage). Finally, there's the option to return any button to its default configuration.

The keyboard has no LEDs indicate whether or not capslock/scroll-lock/number-lock are on. However, once the supplied software has been installed, messages flash up on screen when any of these are turned on or off; and similarly for the eight customisable keys. Also, asjusting the volume brings the "bars" beloved of any TV. (The on-screen messages can be turned off if you wish). The keyboard can be used "flat", or at a normal angle with the flip-out feet at thye back. There is an optional wrist-rest included which worked in flat or angled modes. The wrist-rest seems to make typing more comfortable, but only time will tell. Removing it is a bit fiddly, but possible.

Delivery was prompt (ordered Friday, arrived Tuesday). A couple of the keys on the keyboard wren't in place, but they wer easy enough to click into place, making certain you've got them in the right place. (This seems to happen with a lot of keyboards, regardless of source). Batteries were included! Shame they wren't rechargables though.

Set-up was easy enough - the wireless receiver has the option of PS/2connectors or a single USB (PS/2 is reccomeneded). If you don't like the mouse, there's nothing to stop you attaching a different one. Once attached, the keyabord functions as a standard 105 key keyboard without needing to install any software. Similarly the mouse and scrollwheel work fine. You need to install the software for any of the customaisable buttons to work. Installation was easy enough - don't forget to download the latest version of the software once the main installation is done. Don't bother with the supplied music player though.

All in all, for 43 you get a *lot*. The software is easy to use and set-up was quick and straightforward.
