Could do better November 29, 2008 These units are well built and have a clean simple look about them (compared to some of the really ugly garish designs of other units). They are pretty simple to get up and running and do the job that they are supposed to.
Unfortunately I have 3 major gripes about them:
1. The software used to set up encryption is terrible (and you are left not really knowing whether the encryption has been activated or not). I don't know why they just don't encrypt by default and save you having to mess around with software in the first place.
2. The units are really big (limiting which sockets you can use them in - especially switched mains sockets).
3. The worst problem of all is that they emit a very high pitched squeal when in operation.
You may not notice this if your hearing is not that good (or if you have the units located in a noisy room) but I wanted to use them to connect to a media device in my bedroom, and I found the noise to be so unbearable that I had to send the units back.
Great product November 6, 2008 This item is amazing, works really well and was set up in 10mins. Please remember you will need to install the Netgear devices in the same room to start. Makes it easier, give them both their own names and IDS that you want. Then seperate them to the rooms you want and you are good to go.
Well done Netgear, only complain is they should be a lot smaller and the net cable could do with being on the top of the device.
Very poor October 7, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Bought this to stream HD videos on my Linksys media extender DMA2200 in the bedroom, currently I have a Comtrend EOP which although was stable and could watch TV, it didn't give me the bandwidth needed to stream HDTV.
Plugs are very easy to install, however the bandwidth monitor on my Extender shows that there was not even enough bandwidth for steaming music without interruption!!!! The Netgear configuration utility showed a speed of 4 mbps!! I tested these plugs by plugging them in side by side and found a connection speed of 133mbps - not bad if you want a link in the same room!
I live in a house only 5 years old, Wiring is not an issue here, as I found with the comtrend EOP. I will be asking for a refund, as I see not benefit in this upgrade - and in my opinion Netgear should be sued for miss-advertising a "HD" product!
If you are buying this product hoping that this will be your answer around wireless - go for the cheaper netgear EOP plugs, don't bother with these if you are hoping for HD streaming.
Solid Alternative to Wireless October 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is an excellent product, and very user-friendly. It contains two units (plus suitably long cables), which is all you need to hook up one computer and your router.
I bought it out of frustration at my weak / intermittent wireless connection (I was using the 802.11g wireless standard, and am too disillusioned with wireless to try the new "n" standard). It shouldn't make any difference, but for those who like to know these things I am with Sky broadband, using the Netgear router that is included as part of that package.
This works straight out of the box - I know products often claim to be "plug and play", but with this product it really is that simple. I did have to change one of my computer's connection settings (from a static IP address to "Obtain IP Address Automatically") but most people's settings will already be configured in the right way - I had just changed from the default setting back when I was trying to make wireless work.
There is a set-up CD that should be able to help with any connection problems, but I can't tell you how good that is, because I simply haven't had to use it!
A point on connection speeds - my connection is now marginally faster than with wireless, but I know that the main limiting factor here is that the connection into my house is via overhead phone lines rather than dedicated broadband cabling. The Powerline product is not the problem here. More importantly, from my point of view, now my connection NEVER drops, so from a reliability viewpoint alone this product would earn 5 stars.
The manual says that the adapters should not be plugged into multi-plugs or surge protectors - I have tried doing this anyway, and it works fine. However, common sense dictates that using the adapters in this way would lead to a loss of speed for anyone who actually has the benefit of a high-speed connection in the first place.
So pleasing to find a product that does what it says it will, and with such ease as well.
Perfect for streaming HD content September 30, 2008 Netgear HDXB101 Powerline HD (High Definition) Ethernet Adapter kit (contains 2 HDXB101 devices)
I would highly recommend this product for anyone who's tired with wireless networking. I have a media center in the front room with HD content on it, and I sometimes like to watch it from bed. However, wireless simply isn't fast enough to deliver video in real-time. These Netgear Powerline devices are perfect for the job -- they plug in, and straight away you can stream even 1080p video at full speed.
They are also good for file transferring, although bear in mind that this is still a lot slower than standard wired networking. The ideal solution would be to network the entire house, but as I am renting this isn't an option, and I can just take the Netgear network to my next place. Thoroughly recommended if you're tired of wireless networking!
