Cheap and cheerful August 8, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I had no problems with this machine, i plugged the cables from my old machine into it and it started with no problems. When it turned up it had a dual core 2 pentium and not the advertised celeron so bonus! Also instead of the NVIDIA G7300SE it turned up with an ATI radeon HD2400 pro, not sure what difference that will make but at least it's a DX 10 compatable card! When running the standard 1GB of ram it was fine for surfing the net, but did need more oomph for doing more memory intensive things. After buying 2GB of memory there werent really any problems (for less than 30) Have just bought another 2GB so it should now fly! lol At the end of the day, you need to remember that this machine costs less than 200. Upgrading is always part of a PC process, spend another 30 and you have a very capable machine. The only things it doesnt come with is a monitor or speakers.
Ditch Vista March 28, 2008 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
I ordered one of these and once I ditched Vista and put XP MCE on it and put 2GB of RAM (30) and it runs brilliantly.
Very disappointed in the PC- but brilliant Amazon customer service March 28, 2008 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I'm giving this a low rating because of the equipment itself - but it did give me opportunity to see how brilliant Amazon's customer service is, so if I could split the rating and give 1 star to the product and 5 stars for Amazon's customer service, I would.
I ordered this desktop as my existing PC had developed a fault and I thought it would be an inexpensive way of getting myself out of a pinch until the other one was repaired. Unfortunately the PC arrived and wouldn't recognise the monitor, no matter what. I tried an older monitor and a brand new one - it wouldn't recognise either. I thought perhaps I had received a defective PC, so I returned it for like-for-like replacement (which arrived very quickly) but it had the same fault. In the end, I decided to get a refund, and paid a slight bit more to get an HP laptop from Amazon - which worked brilliantly out of the box - no problem.
During the whole thing though, Amazon's customer service was fantastic - so I feel confident that if I do order from Amazon in the future that I can count on them to help me if there is a problem with the product. Well done Amazon...but as for Acer - I don't think I'll be buying that brand again anytime soon.
Pay the extra and buy a better machine January 26, 2008 27 out of 33 found this review helpful
Very disappointed with this machine - it is slower than 6 year old PIII machine running Windows XP. Surfing the web on it on dial up is excrutiatingly slow and even my 7 year old son moans about it. Today I took it to Acer Service who told me that the standard memory capacity isn't up to the job of running Windows Vista. Even though this is a cheap machine and one should not expect much at such and entry level price, why on earth are Acer proudly plugging this machine as having Vista when the hardware barely supports it? Our only option is to put another one and a half gigabyte of memory in it to bring the speed up to scratch. In hindsight, I wish I had coughed up a bit more for a better machine. The guy at Acer told me it would be better running Windows XP, but when I asked asked if I could downgrade to that, he told me the drivers in the machine would not work with XP! This just goes to show that in the world of computers, you certainly do get what you pay for...
more startup information January 6, 2008 38 out of 44 found this review helpful
I have yet to fully test the machine, my complaint is not enough information for the beginner. I have a new acer lcd monitor plug and play. I plugged it in started the machine and nothing! screen says "Input not supported" how many people know what to do next. I was unable to contact acer, and amazon could not help. Eventually I found out I had to type F8 on start-up go into the safe mode screen choose 640x480 option on start-up and it worked, once started you can then change the screen resolution. Why is the machine supplied like this without supporting information. Also no information with the back up discs on how and when to use them. The 1 star is for this reason only
