 Excellent HOME Computer November 13, 2008
This is an excellent home computer; the machine is amazingly spec'd considering the price... forget about it though if you're seriously into photography / image editing or design.
The vertical gradient problem is very extreme - Let's say you're editing a photograph... if you tilt your head forwards or backwards a couple of centimeters or even if you accidently start slouching whilst working - the image can look dramatically different.
If the gradient problem doesn't scare you off... it is an absolutely awesome machine!!
I can't give this machine 5 stars though... Apple are very naughty for allowing such a severely flawed product to infiltrate the market!

 Better than I expected October 20, 2008
I spent several weeks searching for a PC or Mac I didn't know what to get. My partner uses Macs at work and always raves about them but i wasn't sure if it was worth spending the extra money. To be honest though with a mac you get everything on you need to set up and with the Pc's I looked at I would have had to buy extra to set up.
I have had this just over a year now and I can honestly say that I made the right choice, looks great and does much more than I could ever need.

Bought this first Mac on impulse in Nov 07 with all the hoo-hah over the launch of Leopard (thankful that I didnt fall for Vista!)...so far its been a mixed bag. It certainly is an incredibly sleek and stylish machine, with everything packed into the monitor. The screen is sharp and good enough to watch movies. The iphoto software is incredible and user freindly. The speakers are crysal clear. Other neat and useful touches are Dashboard that allows you to bring up handy bits of info and software; Photo Booth and Time Machine. The latter is especially an advance as it saves your complete computer configuration and all data as it were at any point in time to an external drive...it also has a star wars style futuristic interface! Pity I took so long to set it up....cos...
My imac hard drive crashed/died/expired/self-detonated/KAPUT after just 3 months.....had to be replaced under warranty . Now I have back up on back up! The other flimsy and unreliable bit is the "mighty" mouse. Its buttons have given up and it's now been replaced by my old PC mouse with the "Microsoft" label sitting uncomfortably in front. Also, the image viewer Preview is not a patch on the Windows image viewer. I've had to install a program called "Just Looking" for jpeg files.
In short, I dont regret buying this but i havent really found this machine to be leagues ahead of a PC (but then I havent tried Vista!). Maybe its for folf heavy into graphics and webpages but i'm not sure if only for browsing and the usual tasks. It ceratinly is a stylish machine with a huge "wow" factor and were it not for signs of unreliability, i would've given it 4 or even 5 stars.

Hadn't even heard of imac until my better half dragged me in to the computer shop and showed me this computer.We were only shopping for a PC to replace the old unreliable desktop.I am fairly used to PCs etc but this thing is in its own league.No viruses or firewalls to worry about,open up more than a couple of windows on the old computer and you may as well go out and make dinner while it decides to do something.Easy to start broadband loaded automatically and basically like it says on the box plug and play.Slightly different icons but you soon pick it up and poor old Bill Gates must be quaking in his boots because if I was him I would be worried because if I ever buy another PC it will be the imac mk2.

I bought this on the spur of the moment to replace my old white G5 iMac.
I've been using Macs since the early 90's and owned an iMac since 2000, so I'm familiar with the plus and minus points of Mac ownership.
The first impression of any Mac is cracking open the case and marvelling at the packaging. This iMac is no exception, Apple have surpassed themselves, all the accessories and manuals fit inside a keyboard sized box. You'll have the machine up and running in minutes.
Next the migration assistant was so nearly excellent, it copied everything across from my old Mac and only let itself down by getting stuck in the last minute or so of copying.
So how does the machine work? There are really only surface differences so far between my old machine and the new one. The Leopard iCandy
is nice but often gets in the way, Time Machine is excellent but I've not had to recover anything so far. I've also had two kernel panics in the early days of using this machine, mostly I think because Time machine and my anti-virus package don't play well together (make sure to exclude all your backup drives/ partitions from TM's preferences).
The look of the new machine is great, but as noted elsewhere the keyboard is probably a step backwards, the Mighty Mouse is a huge improvement over the one button mouse Apple used to ship. The screen is HUGE compared to the my old 17" iMac and this is also a big improvement, although the screen isn't suitable for Professional work - it's fine for what I need to do.
The only place this iMac really lets itself down is the miserly approach to RAM (memory), 1Gb simply isn't enough. I've upped it to 2Gb, but I think it's such a memory hungry beast that I've got 4Gb on order. Don't buy Apple's RAM it's extortionate - check Crucial first.
I'll also need to replace office 2004, as the emulated speed is quite painful.
So overall very good, with just a few minuses.
