5 out of 5 stars Build Your Own Home Computer   May 31, 2006
7 out of 8 found this review helpful

Would you like to understand how the computer you use at home works. Then build one - depending on what you want it for the cost can be from a very reasonable 300 up to a less modest 1000+, but you pick the bits and only buy components you'll need.

However then you'll find that buying Windows and all the associated software that will make it work really well, will set you back at least as much as the computer cost you to build.

Or you could opt for Linux - it's at least as good as Windows, there are so many users out there that offer you advice and support for the love of it, not for financial gain.

Buy the Retail boxed version though, rather than downloading the ISO images off the net - it offers you support and ensures the ongoing commercial viability for the Software Providers.

For the one Operating System Purchase, you'll get a cool operating system with smarter desktop than windows, an advanced document editing suite (Similar and compatible with Microsoft Office, and loads of utilities - not to mention an Apache Web Server - host your own web-site, and loads of programming tools and languages to enable you to write interactive Web Applications - rather than just boring static HTML pages.

My advice - get at-least 80Gb Hard Drive, and when you install add on as many of the extra's as you think may be useful.

When using google go to www.google.com/linux to get search results that help you with Linux specifically.

Please have a go and have fun.

4 out of 5 stars Very good distribution for home use after some DIY.   April 24, 2006

Suse Linux is used in German and Czech Republic's government institutions, if they think it's better than using Windows, than it must be :)
After installing it needs some work to play DVD, DViX and MP3, also needs some work to start using latest video cards.
If you can't set network in windows, connect to the Internet and need help from more advanced computer user, than better stay with windows as every Linux distribution requires some IT knowledge from you.
If you know someone who uses Linux and could help at start than you should give it a try.

Yes this is the easiest LINUX for those not wanting to strech there skills too far. It has more wireless network card support than the others including Linksys config free.... looking forward to 10.1.

Just to help those out there.... it is CD and DVD version for 32 bit and 64 bit systems..... get this one, you wont regret it.

5 out of 5 stars suse linux, not what every1 says!   April 18, 2006

there is some person below who has said you can't play dvds, i am here to tell you that you can, and i have installed the codec to let you do it, i am far from an expert, all you need is some common sense and some use of google, like errrr play dvds on suse linux 10. you'll soon find it. someone also said that it doesn't recognise an internet connection.....i am sending this from suse linux 10.0 now...enough said. and you can forget about file transfer??? all you do is plug a drive in or whatever and it comes up...hmmm rocket science huh. another wrote its writing software is rubbish, well technically its as good as microsoft office, but for a lot cheaper. it literally is just as good. very similar layout etc. people also say that it doesnt recognise printers, i have a new epson printer and it got it straight away. lol. installing new things is hard to start with ill admit, but you'll get used to it, i have!

ive had this for 3months yet, all i can say is never ever has it crashed or gone wrong. excellent bit of kit.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Better than Windows, almost as good as Os X (Mac)   February 26, 2006

I had to format my laptop's hard drive and was looking for a cheap operating system to load up to get it working again. So I opted for SuSE Linux because it supports wi-fi internet and most PC's. Sure enough, it installed painlessly, and was up and running within 30 minutes.

If you can spare a couple of extra hours of configuration, you can take it from a good standard config, to a humming supercharged dream of an operating system. For example, you can simply configure Gnome's desktop panels and add themes and extensions to the Firefox browser that comes as standard.

Once you've got your network running, I recommend running YAST (the online update tool) to get the very latest versions of all the software that's included. It's worth it.

In summary, if you're willing to give SuSE a few hours of your time, it will pay you back in spades. Amazing.
