Excellent tool for anyone serious about comunicating data visually December 22, 2008
I should say first of Creating Dynamic Charts in Microsoft Office Excel 2007 that it is quite squarely aimed at the enhanced charting options in Excel 2007 and many of its references do not apply to earlier versions.
Rather than start with how to build the various myriad of chart types available, the book considers first the aim or design considerations you should apply first, to enable you to pick the right chart type and communicate the right message.
As befits a book focussed on dynamic charting there is much on using Excel as a graphical front end to corporate data, yet you do not need to be a programmer or familiar with Management Information Systems (MIS) to get the full value. If you are looking to front end rapidly changing data - as is happening in the finance industry globally a lot just now- this book will become a regularly used toolkit.
The samples on the CD are very useful to build your own examples and can be quickly tailored to corporate data, corporate look and feel.
The book finishes with some scenarios and charts that make you go WOW. As well as communicating data as meaningful information transparently, I learnt how to do so in near real time. If that prospect excites you, as it did me, this is a book worth every penny of its already discounted price.
