4 out of 5 stars Can such a lovely book be narrarated by Death?   March 18, 2007

A wonderful story of hope, courage, and tragedy. As the book cover suggests, it is a story of a German orphan living with her foster family in Himmel (a suburb of Munich), that has to face tragedy from an early age. There are many books that describe heroes of world war II but very few who describe normal German people who refused to play part in Hitler's grand scheme. This is a fictious story that tells the story of such unspoken of heroes from the perspective of Death himself.

Summary: Lovely and engaging read. Though, it is quite long (probably why I gave it 4 stars), the ending is so beautiful. Mr. Zusak has truly created a bestseller.

A thought provoking read. Very well written, and in an unusual style. Don't be put off by the length of the book or the writing style which takes a bit of getting used to over the first few chapters. Once you get past the first 30 pages you will be wrapped up in the story and be sorry it finished.

This is the kind of book I search for and rarely find !

I left the last chapter unread for 2 days because I could not finish it .

Firstly because I cried and then because I could not bare it to be over .

I thoroughly adored and enjoyed this book! It is a real page turner, I am lucky enough to have bought it during my half-term break from college as I was reading late into the night for three days until I had finished it. It is a truly heart wrenching tale about a little girl, Liesel Meminger, and her life during the Nazi reign over Germany, from Death's perspective; who gets all his/her information from a book she wrote when she was fourteen and from his own points of view from when she was ten until she was fourteen. I loved every character, almost equally in some cases, and the plot with it's twists and turns as Death explores and describes Liesel's life from 1939 - 1943. It's everything I could have hoped for from the book when I picked it up and more.

Even after three weeks, I am still thinking about this book. The clarity of the language and the beautiful, yet harrowing images created in the story have burned themselves into my memory. I wept like a baby over the last few pages.
Im torn between wanting to keep the treasure to myself and grabbing everyone and anyone I see and demanding they read this.
A true gem of a book. Please buy this book (see I have made my mind up). Genius. Absolute genius.
