4 out of 5 stars Excellent story to keep you gripped   October 30, 2008

I really enjoyed reading this book and couldn't wait for the next installment. I love the way it all comes about and keeps you gripped all the way through, you dont have a clue where the story is heading.

The story is written from the husband's point of view which i found gave the story an interesting view.

I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars First thriller I've read in a long long time   October 29, 2008

I borrowed this from a friend I work with. It is now going around the office and to different homes. It is a complete page turner and so hard to put it down once picked up. I had to make time and ignore everything else so I could finish it. You do get drawn in to the story and feel for the characters. A must read for everyone even if like me you aren't usually interested in thrillers. I am so tempted to go and buy this book so I can read it again!

    4 out of 5 stars Good page-turning escapism   October 28, 2008

Yes the ending is preposterous, yes I guessed a couple of the twists, but all in all if you want to escape into a ripping yarn for a few hours then you will not be able to put this down. Not a literary masterpiece but an engrossing and fast-paced thriller that will keep you guessing. I liked it.

2 out of 5 stars Had Potential   October 28, 2008

I think this book has a great potential. The plot itself was intriguiung, but beyond that it offered little else. I agree with some of the other reviews that the latter stages of the book were predictable and cliche. I guessed the little twist very early on and hoped that the writer wanted me to think that so i could be led of elsewhere. It wasnt the case, there were not enough characters to even disguise this little twist, so its fairly predictable. For me it lacked any real bite and substance and it was a bit like reading a point horror book from my teenage years. But that said, it was a nice easy read, would be a good one to read on holiday or something.

2 out of 5 stars No Return   October 18, 2008

My first venture into the world of Linwood Barclay, and the last.

Plot looked good, suggestions of a thriller, R & J recommended. First few chapters were intriguing, set the scene, character introductions etc. The we seem to have the a total mind numbingly boring centre piece which totally fails to build any tension. Then you are faced with the end. Felt like last orders had been called and the writer just wanted to pack up and go home.

I find this author has a very immature style, along with strange intricate details that have no use - except page filling and padding.

Really wouldn't bother, if it's a thriller or a page turner you want stick with James Patterson.
