This cherub book is special because instead of starting with a training exercise and ending with a mission it turns it round and starts with a mission and ends with a massive training exercise.The mission and the big training exercise are really good bits of the book which grip you throughout and times which are a bit funny (especially with kazakov who hates americans and trys to start a fight with lots of them).A very good read.

I'm a big fan of this series but I totally agree with the other reviewer that this book is a major disappointment.
There is no excitement in the plot and the characters have become either unbelievable or unlikeable. I am sad to say it looks like this was written in a hurry. Maybe the author had other things on his mind or was too busy now that the series is so successful. the success is deserved because the other books are excellent but this one is a complete dud in my opinion.
I'd recommend rereading the other CHERUB books instead of getting this one or waiting for the next one which will hopefully go back to the standard of the others.
For some genuine excitement try BY ROYAL COMMAND in the YOUNG BOND series by Charlie Higson or the JIMMY COATES books by Joe Craig.

I am a huge fan of the Cherub series, having been gripped by this spy series from book one - The Recruit - and eagerly snapping up each new one as soon as it is published. However, I have to say that The General was a huge disappointment.
The book opens with the main character, James Adams, caught up in a violent demonstration. A truly excellent opening, packed with excitement, tension and plot twists. But it is all down hill from here.
Next, several of the main characters, including James and his sister Lauren, travel to America to take part in a multi-million pound war games exercise. Here, the story is not half as believable, or indeed very exciting. It just seems to mark time while, back at base, a little plot revolving around James' girlfriend is evolving.
The worst part of the book, however, is when James and a teacher take off to play the gaming tables of Las Vegas. Using high tech spy equipment, they hope to make their fortunes....but this is totally, and utterly, unbelievable. For a start, James and the teacher don't even like each other, and for another - both risk being imprisoned for years....
I believe the Alex Rider books jumped the shark when Alex was sent into space to blow up a space hotel, and now the Cherub books have done the same with this gambling story. It is a great, great pity.
I will still be buying the next in the series, but I won't be re-reading The General in a hurry. (Unlike my others, which are completely dog-eared with reading now!).

CHERUB: The General follows the main CHERUB agents to Las Vegas in America, where they take part in one of the biggest war games ever. As always Muchamore is on top form, and the characters are well developed, plots are more action packed, and comical as ever.
We find out more about Kazakov, a Ukrainian training instructor whose brutal tactics and war expertise come right into play when he's asked to head an insurgency against an entire American battalion. As battle begins in the world's largest urban training com, James Adams and his fellow CHERUB agents are on the front line, deploying Kazakov's tactics against the troops. Kazakov thinks he'll have the troops, on the ground and begging for mercy before day two ends; but will it be so easy?
With CHERUB: The General, Muchamore brings forward a new breed of spy book. A book which doesn't need super-human skills, or stunts which are near impossible. Alex Rider bites the dust with a novel which is more realistic than ever before, a gripping and thrilling read which announces Muchamore's arrival onto the number one bestsellers lists and proves that he is a writer who can make teenagers (especially boys) want to read again!
Please don't think that CHERUB is like any other book. It isn't. It's original, it's realistic and it's my favourite!

I got my eyes on it through the whole book this is robert muchamore best book yet really got me into the story you just can't put the book down this book is the book worth getting or waiting for forget all the other this is the one we all are after.
Can't say much about the story due to spolier
