Thick. A lot of paper, but substance? December 14, 1999 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book is very heavy. In places it explains things well, however the index is a bit thin, and the organization of the book unfathomable - I have (so far) failed to find the thread! Topics are started and seem to be resumed 400 pages later. As a reference to ACCESS it fails. It may not be a book on SQL, but SQL is fundamental to Access - this book introduces you to SQL, but you are never on first name terms. It may be that I am the wrong buyer - I have a lot of programming experience, but have not used ACCESS before. The book does not tell you how to manipulate access aside programming (it does have a lot of nooks and crannies!), and assumes (perhaps rightly) that you will program almost everything, and making less use of the wizard driven built in functions in access (rather tedious). Nonetheless exactly what various properties (eg in forms and queries) do is important. I still can't tell DAO from ADO. ACCESS functions on a number of different levels - with this book, you are not quite clear how much they overlap, or where you are. It just doesn't meld together despite its >1500 pages. Finally for such a big book it would be nice to have an online version, rather than just a few examples (and sales pitches for shareware) on the CD. Perhaps if you've the time to read all 1500 pages and work all the examples it is great? Disappointed but maybe its me (hence 3* rather than less). Alternatively if you know ACCESS well(and don't need the book) this may be a great buy. Sorry.
An Essential Book for Access 2000 Automation and VBA September 3, 1999 I purchased this book on the recommendation of our local Access SIG group leader. He spoke highly of authors' Access 97 Handbook. I am new to Access and VBA. I was anxious to come up to speed quickly. I first purchased "Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Access 2000 in 21 days" by Paul Cassel and Pamela Palmer. That book put me on the right path. After almost completing that book, I started tackling some complex automation projects. This book accelerated my learning to an amazing degree. This handbook explains the ADO Model, the Object Model and Automation very clearly and logically. The examples are excellent and the companion CD is really useful. The only topic this book does not cover is the DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange). On the other hand, after reading the book, I realized that the DDE is not necessary for automation since the Object Model is more powerful and efficient. I recommend this book to anyone who has the need to use VBA for automation and for extending the standard capability of Access 2000.
Absolutely the must-have book for every serious Access devel August 31, 1999 Absolutely the must-have book for every serious Access developer. This book is what a professional Access developer is looking for, and much more. Don't look any further, buy this book. In dept coverage of the real development stuff. Drills down into the utmost detail, in particular with reports-design, controling the printer. Excelent advanced SQL teaching, plus the new ANSI-94 SQL. My conclusion: This book is amazing
