Great security & peace of mind July 9, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have used a few security suites over the years, including AVG & Norton, & found them all adequate, but when I purchased a new PC last year, with McAfee installed, I was told I shouldn't use it, as it slows things down quite a bit.
Well, I have used the 2007 edition on two PCs & a laptop for a year, and have found it to be effective, reliable (Norton had a habit of not loading or updating properly), and most of all, unobtrusive. One feature I liked about the 2007 edition was the Site Advisor tool, which has flagged up a few dodgy links, and never let me down.
With this 2008 edition, things are much the same, but just a little bit better. I feel that after a couple of weeks since upgrading, the suite has run and updated very well, and seems not to slow down performance in anyway. There is no obvious change to the interfaces, which makes life easier for upgraders, and the installation is simple, straightforward & pain-free.
I'll be sticking with McAfee, unless someone comes up with something MUCH better!
Seems to work well ... July 8, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
but possibly not worth paying for the package.
I installed this on my macbook, running Windows under Boot Camp, it seemed to install relatively painlessly but it required me to uninstall AVG virus checker and a fairly slow scan and update process.
It doesn't seem to hog the system as other packages do (although I'm running it on a fairly new machine) and the anti-phishing filter seems to work quite nicely although it could probably be a bit more visible. On the down side, a lot of the features seem to duplicate standard windows functionality (defrag, deleting unwanted files) and a lot of the features can be had for free elsewhere (virus checking, malware etc.)
There is even a pretty vocal debate on the internet as to whether you need virus checkers at all, some people see to be opposed to them on ideological grounds. I haven't found their arguments terribly convincing. Given that you can pick up some nasties by doing fairly innocuous things (searching for ultimate zip in my case - that broke a machine at work), I don't think you can avoid trouble by just being careful.
This package is probably most useful for newbies and the cautious, in the meantime I'm leaving it on my machine and trying it on my Dad's machine as a replacement for Spyware Doctor which managed to trash two work machines, whether it's worth paying for is debatable.
**UPDATE** I've taken this off my MacBook as it takes ages to update and scan when you first switch on the computer it grinds to a halt. It also incorrectly identified a legitimate programme as a trojan. So I've un-installed it and put on Kapersky instead.
Pretty unobtrusive July 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm the ideal person to review this, as for years I've used a collection of free security bits and pieces. Recently it was Zone Alarm firewall, AVG anti virus, Spyware Terminator (for unknown processes), WinPatrol (to block auto startups) and Spybot (good on registry changes). They certainly work together but do tend to bombard you with messages at times and sometimes they're warning you about each other. But at least I never got any infections.
People I've helped with PCs like the idea of free security but also the idea of a one stop shop at reasonable cost. The only paid for security suite I've had bad feedback on is Norton, which I've helped remove several times after friends' computers slowed to a crawl. I always wondered what it would be like to use a suite - McAfee, Trend Micro, Panda, Kaspersky or whatever.
Then I got the opportunity to try McAfee for a year for free for the amazon Vine programme. I installed it on my desktop (XP Home) and my wife's laptop (XP Prof, wireless WPA connection). The install and registration process is pretty slick and auto updates work well.
The main thing I've noticed, a couple of weeks on, is how quiet it is - I get the occasional warning or decision to make but nothing like the blizzard of messages Spyware Terminator generated when installing anything new. Needless to say I've not been infected by anything.
The McAfee interface is OK but does have some oddities. One I really dislike is it having a hissy fit because I found it was censoring web access according to some hidden list of key words! No way am I going to allow that sort of big brother interference but when I turned it off there was a persistent and intensely annoying warning parked in the systray, leading to a nasty message about "security vulnerabilities need your attention - keyword scanning is currently disabled". Duh, yes I don't want to be nannied! Hopefully it will disappear on the next reboot. Otherwise I'll think of junking McAfee and going back to the freebies. How can a program treat a user choice it offers as a problem to shout about?
Performance is no better or worse than my freebie collection. XP is still just as slow to start (the recent Microsoft svchost.exe bug is still there, hogging the CPU minutes after startup). McAfee also occasionally slows the PC down drastically by deciding, unasked, to do a full system scan. You can turn that off when you find out what's hitting the performance but it's a bit weird searching google for the process that's killing your machine and finding that it's the McAfee On Demand Scanner out of control. One time I had to restart recording a radio play because McAfee scanning had interrupted/corrupted the audio stream.
I had high hopes for networking, as Zone Alarm had stopped file and printer sharing on our little network. McAfee has an Easy Network component which does let you see and copy files from the other computer. But it's quite clumsy (move a file into a shared folder and it's invisible from the other computer until you go to Tools, Share files on the source machine to force a refresh). I showed it to my wife and she said "that's awful - I'll stick with the memory pen thanks". It does let another computer see a shared printer but an attempt to print generated an uninformative error message so it's memory pen again.
So will I pay for the year 2 subscription? Probably not. But if you're not technical and don't like being asked security questions and have two or more computers it's probably a decent option. But do research the alternatives.
Thank goodness my OH is a whizz! July 4, 2008 7 out of 15 found this review helpful
I chose this from Amazon Vine as I felt I needed some protection for my laptop. Loads of people I know have it, I wish I'd stuck with the one I had which wasn't causing any problem. Now it's on, it just sits there on my computer changing from green to yellow to black depending on whether the site I'm on poses a threat for example. But good grief, installing it was a nightmare. It should be easy. I've installed software before. Pop the CD in and off you go. Not in this case. I had to reboot 5 times. It took a couple of hours. It completely crashed my laptop. A previous reviewer's advice is useful - delete anything that is incompatible with McAfee. If you do that, you may have a smoother ride. The problem with packages like this, is that you don't really know if they are working properly until you have a problem. Well now I don't, except for very slow movement around the internet. Other than that I can't complain, it's doing its job. Just be aware of the challenges and difficulties you might face installing it.
Safe and secure whilst surfing! July 3, 2008 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
McAfee is a big-brand internet security suite, and their 2008 release shows why it's such a popular choice with personal and business users alike. It's really simple to install (and if an older edition is already installed it will uninstall any relevant components for you beforehand) and very clear to understand once it's up and running. The 'control panel' is simple to use and gives at-a-glance overview of the security status of your computer.
I use the internet a lot, and have found that the 'Site Advisor' element of this 2008 software is incredibly useful. It's alarming to think that, prior to this, I never considered the validity or safety of a website and its downloads and associate sites. Now, as long as there's a green 'tick' next to the site on the Google search page, I'm happy to visit!
All in all, a brilliant product that gives great peace of mind whilst surfing the rocky waves of the world wide web. No complaints at all!
