5 out of 5 stars Media on the go - PSP Style.   August 6, 2008
My PSP has largely been used as a games machine. More recently in fact it had been left on the shelf. It was with some interest then that I spotted Sony PSP Media Manager Pro 2.5. This packaged promised to turn the PSP into a media hub for on the go music, video and photos.

The packaged is well designed and very easy to use, even for a novice like me. I was a little suprised at first that I needed to buy some extra bits and pieces to get going (standard USB device cable, a Memory Stick Duo to store the media), but once equiped it was more than worth the outlay.

Once installed it was a simple as dragging my media files from my PC hard drive onto my PSP via the software. Other packages I have used ask complex questions about formats and destinations. This is handled for you here. Bravo! The Quick Start guide was also well written and answered any questions I had.

I did found that with extended use the PSP battery often died before I had finished. This was easily solved by purchasing a spare battery. A bit more outlay but again worth the results.

Overall I recomend this to anyone who wants to use their PSP for more than games, without the fussing around with third party software. This package in the business.

5 out of 5 stars Essential to get the most out of your PSP   August 6, 2008
The PSP is an excellent piece of it, and the new slimline ones with added external video support are excellent but let's face it; UMD's were never really going to catch on. This is where the Media Manager comes in. You simply install th MM onto your computer, plug in your PSP via USB (the cable is mandatory, but they're really cheap if you don't have one and trust me, it's worth it) and drag and drop your way to media heaven. As with the other reviewers here I'd advise boosting your memory card size to at least a couple of gigabytes particularly for larger movie files, but the Media Manager is so easy to use and relatively fast (especially if you have USB 2.0) that swapping and changing every once in a while for music or images is childsplay.

4 out of 5 stars Software you should get with every PSP   August 4, 2008
You'd be forgiven for wondering why something like PSP Media Manager might be necessary, after all it is pretty easy to drag and drop both photos and music to your PSP via your PC without the need for any superfluous software. Adding videos, on the other hand, has always been a bit of a chore requiring the use of something like PSP Video 9 to convert the movies into a compatible format and then to transfer them across. What PSP Media Manager aims to do is to make it easier both to add content and thereafter to organise it using a single piece of software - think of it as a cut-down iTunes for the PSP.

When you first start the program, you're greeted with a screen that has all the hallmarks of something designed by Sony specifically for the PSP, using much the same icons for familiarity. Anyone who has used a PSP will feel at home straight away and should have no problem navigating the software without too much problem. You're given two sections, one showing the content on your PC (which is held in folders the program finds and ones you add yourself) and one showing both the content on your PSP and the remaining available room on its Memory Stick. To get content from one to the other, you simply drag and drop, without needing to worry about whether or not you're putting the items in the right place or if the PSP will find them once they're across.

The software converts videos from most of the popular formats (but not RealPlayer videos, so no converting movies downloaded from YouTube) into the PSPs format of choice, MPEG-4, although you're limited at how quickly this can be done by the speed of your Memory Stick. The lack of an ability to convert RealPlayer videos is a real shame as it is these that I have most trouble converting and with so many other formats supported this omission is quite glaring. Copying CDs is as easy as doing so with iTunes and gives you pretty much the same encoding and other options as you get there, as well as access to the online GraceNote music identifying service.

PSP Manager also lets you set up, copy and manage your website addresses together with game saves, system information and downloaded games - the idea being to make it easy to recover your PSP should anything happen to it or its Memory Stick. You get a one-touch backup mode to make this process even easier. You can also subscribe to podcasts and video blogs and automatically get new episode content directly to your PSP, in much the same way you can on your PC.

It's true that most (if not all) of the features available in PSP Manager are available in other programs, both paid for and freeware, in fact many of the features I got bundled with my VAIO PC. What PSP Manager does is to combine the most useful features of these into a single package so save both time and space on your hard drive. As I said, you'd be forgiven for wondering why something like this might be necessary, but for less than 4 (at time of writing) it does help to turn your PSP into something more than just a games machine; add support for converting RealPlayer videos and this would be a supremely useful program.

4 out of 5 stars If only they did it for MAC users too it would be perfect   August 3, 2008

Before I got PSP Media Manager I used to only use my PSP for gaming and every now and again to watch films however after getting Media Manager I've found that my PSP has so much more to offer

PSP Media Manager is very quick and easy to install, it does most conversions for you automatically, but before you get started with using this program you will need to buy a USB to PSP cable. (You may already have one if you have got the starter or accessory kits) You also need a Memory stick and I would recommend quite a large one (4GB), as it will let you store more on you PSP and Media Manager. I did get stuck when it said, "insert your memory stick". Then I realise it mean plug in you USB to PSP cable in to your computer.

One you set up PSP Media Manager all you then need to do is enter you serial number with is found on the case that you CD come in. Registration takes about 10 minutes.

You can save all your games data on to your computer rather then your memory stick to save space on your memory card. You can then transfer the data back to your memory card to play the game again. This is a very good feature if you only have a small memory stick.

Adding music, video files and photos to your PSP is very easy as all you do is click and drag the song or video you want and put it in to the Media Manager and plug in your PSP and it goes straight on to it.

Overall I think the Media Manager is great value for money. The only downside is that it is PC based and I am generally a MAC user.

I would add I am not such a regular user of the PSP as my daughter Laura and she has helped me review this item.
