1 out of 5 stars absolute rubbish   May 15, 2008

everything about vista reeks of microsoft spending time conjuring up fantasy ideals about what they think an OS should be, instead of asking people what they really need. add to that the fact that it took them much longer than anticipated to implement the design - necessitating the ejection of some of the core features in the process - and you end up with a half-finished product that almost every major hardware company appears to be weary of.

i've had this on my system for over a year, and the most recent discovery was that some of my files are being corrupted and destroyed. even after more than a year, my motherboard (a crosshair) still doesn't have driver support and the sound management is consequently terrible. for a flagship product, these kind of things are totally unacceptable.

i have many, many years of maintaining and fixing pcs, but i have had to admit defeat with this. it is by far the worst thing that MS have released since Windows ME. it looks flash and enticing, but hidden under the "ooh.. isn't that nice" exterior is some of the most counter-intuitive rubbish i've ever had to use. the UAC should surely win an award for the biggest joke in IT history, i simply don't know anyone who hasn't switched it off. security does not mean intruding on a users every interaction with the the interface.

i'm rolling back to XP because i want my machine to actually work. it's as simple as that. it might not be as flash, but it does a better job. vista has been a total waste of time and money for me.

5 out of 5 stars Great piece of OS in Great Price!!!   February 14, 2008

This is absolutely the best operating system currently avaialable in the market. Make no mistake about it! Linux is still couple of year's away from the main stream. OS X is no match for Vista. You really cannot go wrong with Vista, particularly if you have a nex machine. Go for it.

5 out of 5 stars My Review   February 12, 2008

having previously used windows xp for many a time, and the disk suddenly decaying from scratches etc after continuous use, it was time to dump xp overall. Microsoft were unable to send a new cd, so I found this package on the amazon website, and believe me this is value for money.

First, it supports my AMD 4000 SLI esc motherboard, to true 64 bit processing. Second it has 32 bit backward compatibility with older applications which I later found to be ideal as I have xp on the other side of my hard drive, although corrupted, the program files are intact.

Third the OS is more stable to me, and I feel secure/safe, when applying firewall and antivirus and vista updates.

Forth It makes world of warcraft come to life, so those of you who play the game, and want to use your 64bit motherboard/processor to the max, this is the OS for you.

    Happy browsing.

2 out of 5 stars Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium   February 3, 2008
1 out of 5 found this review helpful

Windows has never been a particularly good OS, though XP gave reason for optimism. Vista is a total pig, conflicting with much widely-used (and in some cases industry standard) software (Adobe/Macromedia DreamWeaver 8, Apple QuickTime and Apple iTunes etc for example) that worked perfectly well with Windows XP. Of course, nearly all OEMs are compelled to install Vista on any new hardware, but thankfully Dell will still sell new kit with XP installed. Stick with XP if you have to use a Microsoft Windows OS, otherwise consider a wider range of options...

5 out of 5 stars A great new operating system.   January 11, 2008

There are four versions of Widows Vista available to the public:
    *Home Basic
    *Home Premium
    *Business
    *Ultimate
Each version offers a different set of options with ultimate offering all options and a little bit more.
This edition is Windows Vista Home Premium which is the preferred edition of Windows for home desktop and laptops; it delivers the productivity and entertainment that you need from your PC at home or on the go. Included is Windows Media Centre, which helps you more easily enjoy your digital photos, TV, movies, and music. The dramatically improved digital entertainment experience is one of the key reasons why you may want to upgrade to the latest version of windows.
The new enhanced design makes your PC easier to use the Aero interface enhances the user experience with dynamic reflections, smooth gliding animations, transparent glass-like menu bars, and the ability to switch between your open windows in a new three-dimensional layout. Instant desktop search capabilities, coupled with powerful new ways to organize and visualize your information, means you can instantly find and use the e-mails, documents, photos, music, and the other information you want, when you need it.
Windows vista is one of the safest operating systems released by Microsoft providing protection for you and your data. Windows Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista includes automated defences against malicious software and fraudulent websites so you can use your PC online with greater confidence. Windows Vista Home Premium also provides automatic backup of your files, such as your valuable digital photos, music, movies, documents, and other files, so you can relax and focus on the things you care about most. And, by using the built-in parental controls, parents can help ensure their children's computer use is appropriate and safer.
One aspect to be aware of before upgrading to windows vista is some manufacturers have not released drivers for this platform yet, you should check with their websites before upgrading to vista to avoid disappointment.
